I read on a Ford trucks site this morning where someone had heard that Motorcraft oil filters purchased from Ford dealers are not the same as Motorcraft oil filters purchased elsewhere?

Is there any truth to this rumor?

FWIW, I have purchased one FL820S filter from my local for dealer in the past, & the paint job on it was far better than what I've found on FL820S filters I've purchased at W-m, AZ, etc. Leads me to believe there may be at least a grain of truth to the rumor.

It's been discussed previously that OEM factory Motorcraft filters aren't made by Purolator*. So, from the information you provided, I can believe that some or all dealer Motorcrafts may not be sourced form Purolator either. In any case, I wouldn't worry about it.

*For that matter, Ford uses an ExxonMobil oil fill at the factory. Motorcraft oil available at retail is blended by ConocoPhillips. Go figure...

Some WalMarts also carry the Autolite Filters in an 820 that does not have a silicon anti-drainback valve. It looks like a Fram. I wonder if this is the filter used at the factory. It sells for a few cents less than a Motorcraft but doesn't look near as good.

AFAIK, only the filter installed on the vehicle assembly line is manufactured by Champion Labs. All Motorcraft (service) filters are manufactured by Purolator/Bosch.

What Champion filter brand/model is the same as the Champion-made factory Motorcraft?

No clue, 777. But I recall reading somewhere on here that assembly line filters are made by Champs??

All Engine Plant oil filters for the Ford Engine Division in North America are made by Champ. Yes this does mean Mexico and Canada as well..

It's that simple.

Champ also manufactures for the Motocraft Division of Ford.

The easy way to tell a Champ manufactured filter for Motocraft is by the baseplate assembly. There is a letter code of AA for 3/4"-16 thread.
You see that--it's made by Champ.

Champ does make K&N oil filters.

The ZZ is because of the heavier backplate.

The MM is because of the different looking holes in the backplate..if memory serves.

As an aside, I find it quite humorous how people can castigate one brand of filter, in favor of another, yet the one they are so critical of is made by the same company who makes the one they love, and the two are virtually identical to one another, or the one they hate is actually a higher-line model.

An example would be those who think that the Harley-Davidson 5-micron filter is junk, yet sing praises of the K&N, and both filters are made by Champ Labs. And, the H-D filter has a fully synthetic media, while the K&N uses a synthetic/cellulose blend. Both are made on the exact same filter "chassis," too.

So, someone may be critical of the OEM Ford filter, and love a K&N, for another example.

Go figure.

It's the "feel good factor".

You don't expect someone to plunk down their money and say they bought junk.

That's what marketing departments get paid for--to make you feel good about buying their product.

Why do you think Automobile companies spend so much on TV commercials..to find that one bit that appeals to you...and gives you the reason to buy their product.

Not much different with oil filters...

Someone always wants to say what they put on their motor is better than what you put on yours.
