I think you owe Garret an apology. Very few of us are engineers and we don't need to be. Garret was only expressing an opinion, something we are all free to do. Whether his observations were correct is open for debate, but he does not deserve your rudeness.

My tercel has an FL-400S on it, lol! My other 'yota would too if it wasnt under warranty, so its got a delco filter. As does my chevy.

I've used FL1A's in the dirty cheap little 2.3L fords for many years. I'm not saying they are the best but at 300 k you can't go wrong. My buddy has been using them in his little escort GT for over 300k also. Hard to knock it for the price, but then again 3~4k OCI's have been done religously as well. I am now a proponent of bypass filters though, can't get too much of a good thing, I want to stop buying as much expensive oil and buy more cheap TP !

Anyway, back to the point.

I'm not sure what you are going to expect out of a $3 filter, but given the other filters at this price and lower (and a few higher dollar units), the MC FL-1A is quite a good filter.

A $3 filter is inexpensive. How can they make money selling them? By making them inexpensive to manufacture.

Listen.....cutting open a filter can only tell you so much about the filter.

They are made to filter oil. Cutting it open and observing its aesthetic properties probably won't tell you the whole story......

Here too. I have a remote mount on my 4Runner and use the FL-1A's exclusively. I think the filter is a good compromise and the problems with the light case are more imagined than real. I've not found them any more likely to leak then some other brands with heavier cases and I've yet to blow one out. I use them on my Pathfinder with a remote mount too and it will show almost 70 psi oil pressure at cold startup.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. Sometimes you get more or less...

I just picked up four FL-1As at Wal-Mart and they all have a coil spring bypass valve at the screw-on end of the filter. Not the Spring Steel that the picture shows. I thought Ford "required" the bypass be located at the screw-on end so bypassed oil would not wash over the dirty side of the element and carry contaminants back into the motor.

There is the FL-1HP, which I believe is thicker cased and made for performance applications. It's spec for the 1995 F150 with 460 V8. But the longer FL299 type filters tend to be thicker cased and in the case of Purolator, their L40017 has the bypass valve like a Motorcraft in the threaded end.

TallPaul, you are right about the thicker case on the FL-1HP. The Motorcraft website says that the FL-1HP has "a new canister design for high-performance auto racing" and that "the heavy duty oil filter canister will withstand burst pressures of up to 400 PSI." I believe this is a similar burst rating to that of the heavy duty Mobil 1 and K&N filters.

The curiosity was killing me, so I went out to my garage last night and hacked apart one of my Motorcraft FL820s filters just to see what all the fuss was about.

The only thing that almost burst was my right bicep as I slaved away at the filter cannister with a hacksaw (complete with new blade). I can't imagine how anyone could be concerned about these things "bursting."

Oh, and by the way, the Purolator guts looked absolutely fabulous (as expected).
