In comparing the Motorcraft MSDS from 2005, to the latest Jan. 2007, note the following:
2005 base oil - CAS 64742-54-7 (75-85% Hydrotreated Heavy Paraffinic) (I'm guessing group III?)
2007 base oil - CAS 8042-47-5D (60-100%). I cannot find any info relative to this CAS number, however 8042-47-5 (without 'D' on the end), is a food grade 'White Paraffinic Oil' primarily imported from China, used in lamp oils?
I've tried searching BITOG...does anyone have any info on this?

Thanx

This is big news for fans/users of Motorcraft 5W-20!

The Motorcraft Oils MSDS dated 1-25-2007 indicates that CAS 8042-47-5 is indeed the sole base oil.

Looks like the Conoco-Phillips Grp III oil, imported from Korea, is no longer part of the formulation.

Since the 5W-20 & 5W-30 grades are still labeled synthetic blends, it would appear that all or a portion of the 80472-47-5 base oil is 120 VI index, or higher.

The Penreco division of ConocoPhillips produces a white mineral oil under the trade name of Drakeol, but these products do not typically list a VI index number, as do automotive base oils.

So the big question, here, is who is supplying the Motorcraft formulation today, and what is this new base oil that has to include a percentage of 120+ VI index?

Noticed clear white mineral oil showing up as base of some two cycle oils in last few years. These have very little additive and seem to perform well, so it must work?

Is the Korean base oil still used in Trop Artic & Kendall?

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!
Thanx to everyone beginning to dig into this 'mystery' (of sorts).
As for as Trop Artic using the Korean base...I dunno. The 2005 MSDS states the potential use of a wide variety of "highly refined process streams", I'm guessing not all from Korea.

Dr. Cpk

Since new specs are out on Motorcraft, I was hoping someone here had the new 2007 specs on Trop Artic and/or Kendall.

My guess is that the price-friendly Trop Artic uses the price-friendly Korean base oil. Makes sense at the cash register anyways.

I used my one OCI of MC 5w-20 back in January or February of this year and I got the 'extra half-quart left' bottle in my garage. Is there a stamp-on date on the bottle that I can see somewhere on the bottle to see when it was made like there is for PP? I want to know which formulation I used, old pre 01-07 or the new post 07 so I can decide if I want to try the new one again or look for the old one?

I'm really surprised that this thread didn't get more views & posts!

The MSDS now indicates that the base oil process is the same used for food grade white oil as used in meat slicing equipment, cosmetics & baby oil.

I'm really curious as to how the "Synthetic Blend" verbage is still on the label, as my searches don't turn up any white oil offerings that are severely hydro-processed to meet a minimum Grp III 120 VI index.

Also, was the switch due to base oil costs or is this another "greenie" environment decision on Ford's part?

In order to make a SM 5W-20.

Least expensive - GII / GIII Blend
More expensive - GII+

I suspect the VI varies with the viscosity of each base. So I suspect you have some "White Mineral Oil" that is indeed GIII in the formulation. As a matter of fact it may all be GIII as this may be the beginning of the move toward SN or GF-5.

Bottom Line - I would not be to concerned until I see how it performs. This may also be linked to Fords changing of the OCI on 2007 models from 5000 mi to 7500 mi.

Sooooo, is my beloved MC 5w20 now junk? I have a crankcase full of it and a few jugs left.

I would venture the exact opposite - since Ford is now extending the OCIs on their new vehicles.

I'm betting the new Motorcraft base oils will be better.

We are running Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic 5W20 in both our vehicles. Would have continued it but bought some Havoline 5W20 Synthetic at Big Lots on sale which we will use for a few oil changes.

After the Havoline is gone, will go back to using the Motorcraft 5W20 and agree that with Ford extending their Oil change intervals, it will be just fine.

I've been following this thread since I first saw it. Sending it to the top for further discussion and observations.

Any new developments with the "new" Motorcraft or discussion / speculation on its performance? Is its origin directly tied to the new Ford 7,500 mile recommended OCI's?

Also, any opinions on whether or not Ford's new OCI would be applicable to (or practical for) pre-2007 model years?

Thanks!
