I know it seems like it is just "their turn" for once and a while, but the 2013 1500 is a very very nice truck. They have really put a lot into some of their vehicles and the RAM is one of them. I think this is a legitimate frontrunner.

I don't put much weight in Motor Trend reviews regardless of who wins, but I agree the Ram is as deserving as any. I like the F-150s engine lineup more, but I'd seriously consider a Ram if I was in the market for a full size. It's too bad the 8-speed auto isn't available in the base 4.7, but it does come with the V6. Of course a manual would be nice, but that's not going to happen in any 1/2 ton truck.

I really like the way the Tradesman package regular cab/short beds look without the chrome bumpers and grille.

Couldn't agree more (with MT).

Looks like a great truck for what I see 95% of people using them to do... hauling around their own fat arse and a bed full of air all day.

95% of people who own trucks are fat and haul air? Nevermind the answer is in your signature.

Anyway, good for RAM. Im not a fan of the new body styles, and I would have to see a Ram truck achieve 25 mpg for me to believe it, no matter who they pay and what they put on stickers.

Yeah ditto here. Next year the Silverado will be all new, so it will become the "Truck of the year in 2013". F-150 will be crowned one year after that. Dodge(RAM)to follow after Ford. Repeat.

It sells magazines and I guess it sells vehicles so they can print their magazines. If you want a chuckle, do a Google search for "Motor Trend Car of the year list". I'm sure that back in 1974, everybody thought the Mustang II was quite the hot car also.

Not that it matters, but what other trucks did the Ram beat?

or save yourself a ton of money and get a mid-late 90s 318 ram 1500 for less than two grand. who cares if the interior has fallen apart, its a TRUCK.

Or, a early '80's F150 with a carb'ed 300-6 (20-25 mpg) and a Granny Tranny for $800 and forget about anything but the most basic insurance & registration. Something one can actually WORK on!

Cheers!

p.s. Next up: rebuilding a Motorcraft 2150 2V. Rebuid kit cost $7.30.

LOL! That's what I see here. The roads are just crawling with them. And they drive aggressively too, tailgating, swerving, cutting people off, not using blinkers... another day in Ohio.

95% of the truck drivers I see fit that description to a T, yes.

Seems a bit luxurious to me, but I guess I have 30 year old thinking in that aspect?

Lots of electronic gizmos to go bad on new trucks ... something that is supposed to be more durable.

You can still get a base work-truck Ram with rubber mats, vinyl seat, crank windows.

So although I use my pickup truck at work to haul 3" diaphragm pumps, and the hoses that go with them, and tow the necessary wheel mount air compressor to operate all of that, you may me on my way home and I fall into that catagoey because I'm not towing anything and the bed is empty? Just a thought.

As we all know, the exception to the rule serves to prove the validity of the rule in the first place.

I won't see you on your way home. I make a point not to go into SE LA anymore.

If your bed is empty and you're not towing anything, what's the point in having a truck? Could you not haul 3" diaphragm pumps, hoses & air compressor in a sedan or hatchback just as easily and get twice the fuel economy? Just a thought.

I guess I fall into the camp that buys a vehicle that suits 95% of my needs. I won't buy a vehicle to serve the 5% (towing, hauling, etc...) that penalizes me when it comes to the fuel pump 100% of the time.

It's your money, you are free to do with it what you will to the extent of the law. But it seems awfully silly to me to have a truck that hauls a bed full of air all the time.

How many miles/year are we talking about? Not to take sides here, but at less than 10k/year would it matter what size vehicle one used?

I know one of my coworkers was looking at finding a decent used Corolla/etc, instead of racking up miles on his Silverado, which was set up for towing his travel trailer. In the end he decided against it: I think it's maybe 15 miles to work for him, or maybe it was 45miles round trip.

Bingo. The "competition" was the F150 (won last year), Nissan NV (Not really a truck), and the Ram.

Of course it was Ram's turn this year - I don't think anything won the MT COTY ot TOTY 2 years in a row, so that pushes the F150 out. The NV is not really a truck and VERY bare-bones. Next year the Silverado will be all new and they will win. Then the F150 will be all new and it will win....
