Yep, I know you mentioned the raincheck, but this is different than a raincheck, because you don't need to go to the store during the week that the sale is on. You can simply go in there a week or two later (or even a month later) and get the deal, with no raincheck required. A lot of people blast CT for various reasons, but the one thing they definitely have is great customer service. I've never gotten a hassle when returning defective items, or even when returning items that I simply didn't end up needing.
Back to your original question Benny, based on my used oil analysis of Motomaster F1 Synthetic versus others I have had used oil analysis done on, I would say that the Motomaster synthetic is probably a little light in the additive dept. No surprise because these big chains will squeeze the margins from their suppliers as much as they can. Therefore it's not likely that Motomaster F1 Synthetic will contain the same level or quality of additives as say a Quaker State synthetic or Valvoline synthetic. And again, used oil analysis on those oils from my engine pretty much confirm that.
Despite experimenting with different grpIII synthetics in my sludge beast engine, the best used oil analysis I've had so far is with plain-Jane Pennzoil 5w30 in the yellow jug. And it was the cheapest of any of them - on sale at 10 bucks for a 5 liter jug.

In the case of the Motomaster 5w-20 F1 synthetic if they state it exceeds API SM and GF-4 then should it not be adequate enough in spite of what you mentioned about their lack of additives?
Just used a mix of that F1 5w-20 (4.5 litres) & GC green (couple litres) in my Hemi. Will do a used oil analysis on it later on.

truth is, im only interested in this oil for my mom's 2000 mercury cougar. i've been putting Mobil 1 5w30 in it, but figured its a waste of money, cuz its over-priced and i really dont care much about the car. so i decided that it will pretty much get ANY synthetic that is on sale from now on. i only go synthetic cuz it means i dont need to crawl under that stupid car as often.
my BMW only gets liqui-moly 5W-40.

How does that make it easier? With my idea you only make one trip to CT. Unless you already happen to be there when it's on sale that is, and find it out of stock, then of course you should get the raincheck. But if the store that you go to is constantly disappointing you by being out of stock when things go on sale, then you're better off just waiting until the sale is over and going back in then.
CT is notorious for putting things on sale but then only having one or two of that item in stock, so then everybody gets stuck either having to get a raincheck, or sometimes people end up just settling for a similar item (at a higher price of course)

Yes, but just adequate. There's a difference between an oil being adequate and another being a solid performer.
Well one of the benefits of having a stash is that when I don't find the desired oil on sale I can simply ignore it

You'd think that at some point they would adjust their inventory towards the popular lower viscosity and aways from 10W30s and 10W40s.
Anyway Motomaster's Formula1 is nicely priced on sales and may have better cold temp features, so I generally get some when not sold out. Decent oil.

As I have personally seen, they don't usually put their price back down when they are not within the sale period without a raincheck.

This stuff better be good. I grabbed 17 litres of it.

You situation is unique, because they don't do that here.
Wal-Mart has Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 and 10w30 on sale this week for $29.66 for a 4.4L jug with a 1L jug as a bonus.
($29.66 for 5.4L vs $37 for a 5L jug).
About a 20% saving, but it's better than paying full price.
I had to hit two different stores to find 5w30 in stock, and even then I got the last one at the second store.
Of course, none of the Motomaster oils are API licensed, and they used to put wild claims on the label like "energy conserving" on their 20w50, but if it's actually Shell Canada oil then it should be fine stuff. Funny thing is I can't find a synthetic 5w20 listed on the Shell websites.
I did the old enter the number into the material safety data sheet trick and it came up with nothing! The number on my 5-20 bottles is 288711 so out of curiousity I typed in 288712 and it came up as shell 5-20 synthetic? Could this be a simple mistake or have they changed their supplier of this oil recently? Also, printed on my 1 litre bottles of 5-20 is the following sequence of numbers 11/15/06. I assume this is a date but since I got this oil on tuesday the 14th it has me very confused. I can only assume that canadian tire has developd a time machine and is importing oils from the future where manufacturing costs are significantly lower and selling them now for huge profits.
