O'reilly has Mothers Ceramic Spray Coating on sale for $17.99. I guess I'm out of the loop but I'd never heard of these ceramic coatings before and was wondering how they compare to real or synthetic waxes that I've always used. Do you wax first and then apply the ceramic coating, vice versa? Or does this take the place of the wax?

Worth the price? I could buy twice the amount of good wax/sealer for the price of that spray coating.

Curious what you guys think about the benefits / usefulness of ceramic coating vs wax as well as the particular Mothers product I refered to.

Ceramic coatings are a stand alone product. They are excellent in protection and their super slick finish helps to prevent dirt buildup on the car body.

The newer spray products are a convenience and work great for those with little time. The durability will depend on the climate and exposure the car gets. You should get 3-4 months easy and maybe 6-8 months with ideal conditions.

Autogeek and Autopia have forums that both have a long discussion on this Mothers product. The key is how you apply it and the most common mistake is using too much.

To add another thought after I already posted,

I have been using Sonax Spray and Seal. This can be be used on its own or as a topper. The big difference between these two products is that the Mothers is a spray and wipe off product while the Sonax product is a spray and hose off. Again, it's the convenience factor. I find that I can get three months durability in the winter and four months the rest of the year with about 5-10 minutes of work with Sonax.
