Most trendy and/or fashionable cars?

Anything east of the 5 in SD doesn't matter...j/k! It's amazing how many differences there are from town to town throughout this county.

I hate it when a car company zeros in on a certain population segment. So even if the car is good, I don't want people thinking I'm gay because I drive a Subaru or I'm a old guy in Depends when I drive a Volvo or I'm having my period because I drive an Odyssey or I never wash my 'nads because I drive a '64 IH pick-up or I'm some guy that looks like "The Critic" because I drive an 02 Civic with a 18" ID phat pipe.......

I'm old enough not to care what is trendy and/or fashionable.

This area is hardly the automotive capital of the world. Lots of Ford and GM beaters on the road.

I was at a 4 way stop last week and a lady in a beater approached the intersection. She got on the brakes (if you want to call them that) and all I could hear was a loud metallic squealing noise. No padding left on the pads! I tensed up at the wheel, bracing myself for the collision. She never stopped and just turned through the intersection. She yelled out the window, "If you don't like it, buy me a new one!" Driving either an old Escort or Cavalier with a few kids in the car.

College student car is usually a hand me down Honda or Toyota. See a few VWs, too. Seem to get the job done and hold together pretty well.

Some tricked out Hondas on the road, too, for the tuner crowd.

Old folks car is hands down a Buick, often wearing a handicapped driver tag. Buick drivers should be extinct in another 10 or 20 years, unless the follow on generation retains a thing for Buicks.

Most cars are represented in varying degreees, though. Just hard to single out a trendy or popular car. I'd say new money trying to advertise it has a thing for BMW.

There is used 11 year old Mercedes and 3 year old Volvo in my garage. We bought them for their record of longetivity. More Volvos than you might think around here, good winter car reputation, perhaps. My automotive mission is to see just how many miles the old Mercedes can rack up!

Here in the DC metro area I see a lot of:

BMW 3 series

MB C Class

Volvo wagons

Around here the most trendy "college chick" car is the Volkswagen Jetta.

But in central WI, it's mostly domestics that rule the highways. I can't recall the last time I saw a Porsche on the road. Even BMWs are scarce.

There's enough ricers, but it's mostly Grand Ams, Taurus, etc. that make up the bulk of what's on the road. Camrys and Accords are popular amongst the car-dumb, but nobody with any mechanical aptitude or interest in cars really drives them. Pickup trucks and SUVs are really popular too. I think there's more 88-99 Chevy C/K trucks around this area than anywhere else I've been.

Ford Model T. Get one of those in good condition and you have something not everybody else have.

I saw a large group of Model A Fords in the Sierra Nevada near Quincy last weekend. They were on a 400 mile round trip from Modesto. Their backup cars were a 48 Ford and 38 Ford Pickup.

Besides the Prius being fairly trendy around here right now, I believe the lifetime award goes to the BMW 3 series. Way too many snooty college girls and housewives driving 3 series. And now it's gotten so ugly, and chicks still dig them.

I think you have to combine the driver and the vehicle to get the trendy award. I pulled a Civic Hybrid out of a ditch with a '50 Chevy 1-ton pickup. Driver error. After pulling the car out, the driver told me I should be more considerate of the environment and drive a more eco friendly vehicle. That owner came very close to being put back into the ditch. I think some of these eco friendly cars trade on the idea that some people are better than the rest of us. They know it, and when they drive one of these arcade game cars, then we know it too. I'll bet that's whey the Prius will outsell the Civic and Accord. It's got that litttle bit of extra appeal. That Civic from the ditch had a great big decal on the back that told the world that this was a driver that cared.

Ahhhhh Louie -- another opportunity to cross swords

! My Prius has one of those "I care about saving the world" stickers on the back too -- it reads, "United States Marine Corps". Really, truly, while I am concerned about not being enviro-foolish, I don't seek the approval of others on this basis either. My lot in life has me driving 35-40k miles per year (which will probably increase when I demobilize and return to civilian life). I'm not willing to do a Yaris to get great mileage, so this car fits the bill very nicely. Hey, the mow-ron in the Civic is an a-hole, pure and simple. He simply uses his car as another way of demonstrating the content of his character. You shoulda put him back in the ditch -- you're nicer than I am, I would have!!! Please, however, don't tar all of us who choose this neat machine with the same brush.

The shanty is surrounded by nearby area containing the upper-crust of nearby Omaha.

Poverty surrounded by wealth.

Ferraris are not rare. Older muscle cars that cost $30,000 and more rumble by on the weekend drive.

SUVs abound. Not the smaller cheaper ones.... the fully-loaded $50,000 and up machines that will likely never see off-road use driven by thin-wristed chaps who likely never toiled outside a corporate cubicle.

Many mini-vans driven by the females with the cell phone glued to their empty heads. Yapping incessantly as they constantly break every traffic law created along with shunning the common sense actions and inactions that accompany safe driving. The vile spawn of the upper crust being driven to this activity and that. Interesting how many of those not-so-mini-vans have the large sticker on the reat tailgate...the black and white soccer ball. Soccer Moms!!!! Run for your life!!!!! Climb a tree!!!! She has that cell phone clamped to her pointy head and is devoting a minute amount of brain power to the driving function.

Local high school parking lot. There is more "wealth" from the student's cars within than many 3rd-world countries. The teacher's parking lot holds shabbiness compared to the kid's cars.

BMWs, HUGE SUVs, brand new V8 Mustangs and top-of-the-line this and that. Males tend to own (yes, own, not drive mommy or daddy's car) the most high-powered vehicle available and many have aftermarket accessories such as exhaust, power chips, etc. Trucks are raised and lowered and this and that......to the tune of thousand's of dollars of various add-ons.

The elite's precious princesses, the young females, sure do like those Lexuses (Lexi?) and other expensive cars. Females seldom have modifications but their cars possess every accessory imaginable.

Thus, 'round these parts, every type of vehicle is seen with one main commonality.... the vehicles are expensive, the top-of-the-line models.

The kids regularly wreck their high-powered cars, especially the males. Deaths are a yearly event with major to minor injuries so frequent they often go unreported in the local newspaper. And, depending upon the socio-economic level, the kids from the few poorer families will be mentioned in the paper, especially about negative events with usually only fatalities reported when the kid belongs to the "proper" class.

Very interesting socio-economic observations here in the land of many haves and a few have-nots.

I have learned to stay off the road when school lets out. Hundreds of females yapping on that cell phone while transporting their offspring create a menace. Then there is the mass of high school kids rampaging in their high-powered machines, threatening all who have the nerve to get in their way.

Will a police presence be seen when the kids enter or depart the school at ultr-high velocities? No. Not that I've seen. It's a hands-off approach by the constabulary in regards to the "special ones."

I'll nominate that for the post of the month.

At a family get-together a distant in-law that drives a Prius was telling me about her gas mileage. She claimed that she got 60 mpg on a recient trip. She drive 65 on the freeway, no matter how many cars piled behind her. She said that it was her right to drive in the fast lane because she was driving the speed limit, and she cares about the environment. Then, in front of everyone, she asked me how my V8 4Runner does. Well, it gets 18mpg, but just to stir the pot I told here that I'm working on trying to get it up to 10mpg but that I refuse to drive below 80mph because I'm always in a hurry and have lots of places to go. She got so upset at me that she left the get-together in a big huff. I nominate the Prius with her as the spokesperson for the trendy car award. I don't think she represents all Prius drivers, but she would like to.

Louie:

I can assure that she doesn't represent me, and she never will. Did you ask her, by the way, how she justifies breaking the law (obstructing traffic flow in the left lane) in order to enforce her enviro-agenda? Left lane bandits rarely have a good answer to that question.

I guess that from a sheer numbers perspective, I can't disupte that the Prius has become a "trendy" car. Just try to find one in stock at a dealer. Of course, I suspect the demand will slacken as fuel prices ease for now, and those that want them for all the wrong reasons look for other statements to make with their money.

And hey, I'm reasonably certain that the quality of your get-together was immediately enhanced by this gem-of-a-person's departure. Well done.

Gentlemen,
I neglected to menton the Nissan Altima. I wouldn't label it trendy. Popular? I am seeing quite a few new ones on the road. Not a bad looking car. I don't know what they cost. But it is obviously making inroads among people looking for a family car.

I can see her tombstone now,

"She arrived in a Prius but left in a Huff."

Since I work at GM Headquarters, I see a ton of whatever's-not-selling-so-they-put-it-in-the-PEP-car-program for all the management to drive. The latest is the yellow H2. I counted no less than half a dozen yellow H2's in a single parking lot on the way plus a couple more in my parking deck into work the other day. I even got the "pleasure" of driving one a couple weeks ago. Man, what a garrish and overbearing vehicle that is!

My personal favorite is the Saturn Sky Redline. Awesome looking and fun as he!! to drive! What's even better is there aren't a lot of them on the road, so you don't come across as a "me too" type.

ekpolk, is it really illegal? or is it just inconsiderate? sounds like she just has a lack of class to me, I've heard that you must keep with the flow of traffic and cannot impede it by driving significantly slower, but does that count if everyone is driving 90 mph in the fast lane? she should have just had respect and moved over a lane - but I guess that prius has really good air bags cause she's trusting that no one will put her into the wall.
