Most primitive engine in recently available vehicles

Was just wondering whether there is anything sold recently, since 2015 or so, with a more primitive engine than a 6.0 vortec? My 2500HD has the L96 engine - pushrod v8, port injection, vvt, no AFM, no turbo, no direct injection. Has anything less technically advanced been sold in a passenger vehicle in the US in the past few years?
 
Need anything more in a HD truck? The 6.4L Dodge Hemi isn't much different nor is the 7.3L Ford. OHC engines haven't faired as well in this segment besides the 6.2L Ford.....It's predecessor, The 3V 5.4L would be wore smooth out in 200,000 miles in a F250 Service Truck if it didn't drop a valve before that.

The 2V 5.4L was pretty good even with it's short thread spark plug cylinder heads & low power in a heavy truck.
 
Hmm... I think you could say the electric motors that propel hybrid and all-electric vehicles are actually fairly primitive by your definition, since the design and construction of electric motors haven't fundamentally changed all that much over the decades. The batteries and electronics are the highest-tech parts of those vehicles.
 
the n.a. 1.5 liter 4 cylinder in my 2014 toyota yaris l. it’s found all over the world. the primitive tell: this model comes with hand crank windows.
I think the gm had the last 4 cyl's with pushrods, the iron duke, and maybe whatever was in the 80's cavaliers? I don't know when the last 4 cyl not to have variable valve timing would be? 2011 Focus had no VVT, I guess the 4 cyl rangers were made after that which didn't have VVT either. No DI was a selling feature for our Outback for me, it gets good mileage without it.
I thought the 3 cyl in the Mitsubishi Mirage might not have VVT but it does.
 
The solid cammed DOHC with shimmed inverted buckets on my 2 liter Ecosport.

So primitive it has 12:1 compression and is cammed up to the high heavens.
And gets bad fuel mileage!
But boy does it purr with premium gas.
Almost as silly as putting the Yamaha V8 in a Tarus with and automatic.
But, My good friend loves his SHO for sho !

GM tried to keep the 6.6 gas V-8 basic in the 3/4 tons with no AFM but broke down and put DI in it. Still a pushrod engine with VVT but no Turbo.

yeah it sounds like the ford 7.3 might be the closest truck engine. i think the hemis have displacement on demand?

i am surprised to hear so many smaller car engines mentioned. i guess i figured they would have been modernized before the HD truck engines.
 
The VW 2.0 sohc dates back to the 70s. I think it was sold until 2015 or so here..
Was going to mention the 2.slow.

- No VVT
- 2 valves per cylinder, SOHC
- Port injection
- No coil on plug ignition (yes still had spark plug wires).

I had a 2015 Jetta S 2.0 for a little bit - put out a whopping 115HP and IIRC 125 lb/ft torque. It had a nice growl to it but that thing was not going to win any stoplight races.
 
Maybe the Toyota/Lexus V6 ? Dunno for sure...
Toyota refreshed it just recently but it’s still an “old” design. The 2ZR-FXE in the current Prius/CT200h is ancient compared to the current Dynamic Force engines.

The Honda J/K series is pretty “old” too. But it’s testament to the 20+ year old design as well.
