I do frequently hound my WalMart looking for steeply discounted oil sales but I have never seen the VR1 below regular list unfortunately. But I remain hopeful one day

I don't see a problem using Pennzoil conventional straight 30, and a break in additive.

Actually Pennzoil Conventional is high in moly, and we don't want friction modifier during break in so that's not ideal.

Funny you mentioned that. A guy I worked with about 40 years ago in a machine shop is an engine builder in his own shop now. I could have sworn he uses 30 grade Pennzoil Conventional and RL Break In Additive to break in his engines. I will be bringing him a flywheel out of a boat to replace a ring gear when he gets back from vacation and I will ask him to be sure.

Me neither, but at least it is cheaper than the other conventionals. That's probably why they won't stock 10w30 VR1, to not interfere.

I wish that were the case at my WalMart. VR1 here is nearly $8/L but the 4.73L end cap conventional oils (Valvoline conventional, Castrol GTX, Quaker State Advanced Durability etc.) are frequently about $14 or roughly $3/L.

I'm talking only regular prices, of course. Last time I was at Walmart and looked, the VR1 was something like $5 litre, which is cheaper than the $28 per five litre jug for regular prices. But, you're right, it never gets rolled back.
