Most frequently heard bad noises

All types of vehicles: power steering whine OR accessory belt squealing.

Chryco minivans that 'creak' and 'click' at low speeds.

Valve clicking/tapping on all kinds of engines.

the A604/41TE transmissions all make that noise to a certain extent.
it was one of the first bandless/spragless all electronic transmissions, so you hear the solenoids in the valve body buzzing and clicking. I'm not certain why no one ever bothered to isolate or insulate that noise. Not sure about a lot of Chrysler's decisions. For every really good idea they have they seem to have three really bad ones.

The thing I notice is valvetrain noise on old Audis. I know, I know...the Audi-philes tell me they run like that for a long time. But really? You want to claim Tier One Luxury legitimacy and your cars rattle and knock?

On the Audis? If definitely valvetrain noise. I didn't "red-rag" the tailpipe but I know valvetrain noise when I hear it. And it is pretty common. The noises are well documented on countless other Audis.

Didn't even see your post Spaz, wasn't talking about Audi, especially because I know what you're talking about, but American cars in general have classic exhaust leak problems and everyone diagnoses it as valves or lifters on every board I have been on... very frustrating. Just about every GMT400 GM truck I have seen in the past 10 years has it so bad its embarassing to hear.

GM 3.8 rod knock or valvetrain noise. I swear every other Buick from the late 90's, early 2K's I see rolling around is making a rapping rod noise or some hideous valvetrain noise.

Honda valvetrain noise.

Ford power steering pump noise.

And bad brakes on pretty much everything.

That's the fuel pump. They are also known to die.

Blend door actuator on C/K series GM trucks.

When you shut off the engine it sounds like a leprechaun is trying to kick his way out of the dash.

It's about a $40 part. Takes a good part of a Saturday to fix it though.

My 89 does it when it shuts off but 190,000 miles of towing 5th wheels if that is my biggest problem besides a loud fan clutch. I am not going to complain.

I'm suprised when a car comes in with that distinctive moan and it's not a Ford.

More suprised at how long Fords continue to work in spite of that horrible sound.

My '97 Dakota has the HD fan and clutch on it (it's a 9-blade fan, vs. the normal 5-blade) and the fan roar is as loud as I've ever heard. It'll roar for the first 60-90 seconds of driving after a cold start, and there's a significant drag on the engine when it does. I've only heard it begin to roar once on a super hot day, after sitting in a drive-thru lane. Other than that, I can never hear it "engage".

At the grocery store I'll hear that "Fender squeel" almost like nails on the chalfboard sound coming from a car that has bent up fenders or hinges or SOMETHING lol......It's like straight up metal against metal screeching as they open/close their door :P

Belt "chirping" on the highway.....

Remember the Mazda trucks of the 80's - they all sounded like they needed a valve adjustment bad. You could hear them clattering from a mile away.

90's Nissan 2.4l cold startup cam chain rattle.

Civics owned by kids.

This is almost the exact same noise I hear quite often, and from the same engine. There is plenty of videos on youtube about it with this engine

@ 46 seconds......well there's his problem! His oil is now like a 40w-90!
