Most disturbing US documentary I've seen: OBESITY

Hold up on the flame throwing just a minute... I would like to give you a couple of situations where life styles, eating habits do not correlate with fat people. First my Mama the finest one alive is overweight she just can't help it... she eats 1/3 of what i do and can NOT keep the weight off.. she still works every day after two back surgeries etc.. she had her gall bladder removed is what the doctors think may have caused her to have an overweight problem...

Now my kids have the choice it's in the pantry, and on te table they have junk food little debbies, chips, you name it good junk food... They also have a choice of oatmeal, and I keep fruit on the table at all times, apples, grapes, bananas etc.. 9 times out of 10 they will choose fruit or oatmeal over the junk food !! I do the very same think good apples, and cinnamon oatmeal beats the [censored] out of any sugared up junk food.. and grapes are the perfect walk by snack it's easier to grab some grapes, and they taste much better than junk food as well, however my kids do have a sweet tooth and maybe once a day (prob less than that) they will grab a sweet...

My point is it's the environment that makes the difference, set the environment for the kids to have a choice and whatever you do don't forbid junk food/sweets as that will make them want it more... the kids will choose the better tasting food, and mother nature makes the best tasting food by far than any junk food...

Still we have special nights where I cook the kids brownies, cookies, or something good, and sweet... Neither of my kids are overweight, and are in very very good shape, way to much energy for me to keep up with...

Once more base to touch off on, I have been experimenting last month or so with juices, water etc trying to do the same think getting my kids to choose juice or water over cokes... I have had some success with this as my son will now choose orange juice over coke most of the time, and loves apple juice. But don't think mother nature does not load these same snacks up with sugar I know it's a different type of sugar, but still the amount of sugar in orange juice, apple/peach etc grapes is something to think about.

Before I ever linked to BITOG I had fixed me a bowl of oatmeal for a snack before bedtime.... kids also learn from their parents as well, so this is yet another string aspect of the big view on the way kids eat, what they eat, and their daily activities... I also have the two very best kids in this world, full of fire, ready to go and wide open...we have the best time I'm a single parent so I do get to pick, and choose a bit more I guess than some other parents that have different views on what snacks to lay out...

I split 20 wings and an order of fries with my fiancee last night. Between us we ate 14 wings and half the fries. I'm eating the rest tomorrow night for dinner. Friends of mine will gladly eat 14 wings and the fries by themselves. Then they wonder why they feel like they do...

how big are the kids meals now a days? I know mcd's sell the mighty happy meal or something like that. aka "supersized" happy meal.

Some tourists, some security personnel.

Everyone was walking, and walking like their life depended on it rather than being parked in a yellow cab.

San Francisco had more overweight people, which I can only sort of attribute to the fact that SF was way more car friendly than NY.

The cost of food (low), and portion size (huge) were also eye openers. Resteraunteurs were, in general, not very hospitable to us returning 1/3 to 1/2 of our meal, demanding to know "what's wrong with our food".

Simply telling them that it was lovely, but too much didn't wash in most of the cases

I've around the world. Each time I come back to the USA, I can see a HUGE difference.

My mom was the same way. We ate health foods(raw veggies, lean meats). She was overweight because she had a desk job and never worked out and had health problems. She finally joined the gym and lost 45 pounds and majority of her health problems disappeared.

But wow, I will have to add this to my list: Environment. I understand, I've been to the South a whole bunch of times and their food is extremely fatty!

If you've ever traveled to countries where people are thinner, you'll notice a big difference in the food portions that restaurants there serve compared to the US & Canada. It's pretty striking. I also found it interesting that immigrants who move to the US typically gain weight in their first year living here. I used to work for a company with H1B's and the ones I spoke to said they all experienced significant weight gain in their first couple of years in the US.

^^Except Mexico where corn is highly popular.

I agree. I've seen Asian immigrants look skinny during ESL classes. After they learn English and actually get out and do things, they chunk up.

American freedom has a price. Cheap and an abundance of food and relaxation.

You can thank the Giant Food Producers for some of our obesity epidemic. I think there are about 4 or 5 total now, each year there are fewer.

Find a local co-op near your home and get whole foods straight from the farmers. Go to the grocery store only when needed.

And quit thinking juice is good for you or your kids. It's not. Unless you eat the food whole you are simply not getting the natural potential in it.

Interesting article in New Scientist probably about a decade ago.

Even lemons as a fruit eaten whole alkalised, while juices in general tended to acidify

Hi Shannow,

Lemons, and other citrus fruit, are alkalizing due to their high potassium content. If lemon juice is acidifying, it must be due to a lack of potassium. Where did the potassium go when the lemons were squeezed? Please explain!

Cheers,

John, you appear to be well versed on the topic ..and Shannow may be "tied up down under" so to speak. Can you answer the rhetorically presented question so we're not all in knots with the suspense in not knowing?

My wife and I were digging through some "old" (from the 70's & 80's) family photos and it was noticeable how skinny everyone was -- We looked almost emaciated. The ironic thing is, we did not have healthy diets whatsoever. We ate sugar laden cereal for breakfast, bologna and cheese on white bread for lunch (or if lucky, a hot dog and tater tots), drank sugary beverages (kool aid, five alive, Hawaiian punch), and topped it all of with red meat, potatoes, and canned veggies for dinner. We definitely consumed our fair share of butter, lard, and sugar in the process.

This diet would make a nutritionist cringe but it was fairly normal back in the 70's. Obesity was rare and unheard of for kids. I suspect a big part was we didn't drink much soda, we exercised, ate at home (even the worst home cooked meal is still better than eating out) but I wonder how much other factors are contributing to obesity today -- HFCS, phytoestrogens, BHP, etc.?

I just watched Stand By Me last month for the first time in years. When I first saw it, I can remember thinking how huge Jerry O'Connell's character was. 25 years later, he's closer to the norm for Jr. High aged kids. Something is terribly wrong.

The last thing we need is to worry about what the Military thinks. Bad enough people can't think for themselves.

I mean I can understand the reasoning behind it, I myself was 270lbs, then 195(lost the weight) and now have been 230lbs for the past 2 years. Food is a comfort, always has been and its for everyone. Everyone of you has indulged in this behavior without possibly realizing it. The difference is you have done it in moderation, have done some type of activity, have a social life.

Many people do not have moderation control, or an activity or a social life.

Our diets aren't geared to our mostly sedentary lifestyles. It's pretty much that simple. Fat kids aren't the norm. There are just more of them.

While there is surely much merit to the "just pull yourself away from the table" truism. Some are given a free ride on the trip.

Anyone see Phil Jackson perform as a NY Knick? Take Weird Al Yankovic ..put him in a rack and stretch him out.

Why isn't he a fat man?

With all this weight/obesity talk I have noticed more cars on the road at or over capacity. The neighbors kids come to mind. Young daughter and her friends pile in the car and the body is darn near rubbing the rear tires its sagging so much. In my younger days that would mean maybe 4-5 people crammed in back but with her that is just 2-3 girls in the back. Lightest one is probably 150 at 5'2" (the heaviest girl said she was 225 but prob lying is prob really 250) and the daughter herself is 185-200. Heck with her and her friends the car is hauling approx. 975lbs based on what I guess the girls' total weights are. There was a show on TV about our fat butts overloading cars and the safety of it. Some 5 pass vehicles would be overloaded with 5 actual normal sized adults in it! Not incl luggage etc.
