More valve chatter with PP?

I changed the oil & filter this weekend...I'm now on my second run of Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20. After I finished, started it up, and let it idle down and run for a few minutes, I could've sworn I heard more valve noise than normal. I don't know if it was just my imagination because I was listening for something, or if there was something to it. FWIW, I don't seem to hear it now.

Anybody else notice noisier valves with Pennzoil Platinum? Right after changing or continuous?

My car is always a little louder for a few seconds after each oil change. Fresh oil in the pan and an empty oil filter is just my guess as too why this happens. I happen to love the Pennzoil Platinum in my crankcase.

Since Honda recommends 5W-20, you have no choice but to continue using it.

Valve chatter is just a normal occurrence of following the manufacturer's viscosity recommendation.

You may be wearing out your valve guides, but at least you're following the rules.

My S2000 valve train noise was non-existent with the first batch of Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 (EOP). I ran it for 5K and changed it to Pennzoil Platinum 10W30 (new, improved Group III). I was then inundated with valve train noise at cold start up for a minute or two. I put up with it for 2K, and then switched back to Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic 10W30, which I had used previously to Pennzoil Platinum. No more valve train noise. Whatever happened to the EOP formula Pennzoil Platinum. I think they had something good going there!

I switched over to Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 and found my engine to be a bit more quiet than the previous oil (Honda Genuine 5W-20). No signs of consumption either (after~ 300 miles). So far any way. Go figure.

No valve clatter or abnormal noises.

A lot of people with LS1 engines (like I've got in my Corvette) report strange noises on startup (either piston slap or valvetrain noise) but mine sounds perfectly fine with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in there. It sounds just the same as it did with GC.

Sometimes I think LS1 owners are imagining things.

I experience this from time to time with my GM 5.3L V8. Not the start-up immediately after the oil change and 2-3 minutes of run time to make sure the filter is charged, but the 2nd start on the next day.

Not really sure what the reason is - could have something to do with the oil needing to see full operating temperature before all the additives start to perform

Could also be the oil gets aerated during the pour down the fill tube & needs some circulation time to de-bubble

Oh, I meant to ask if you put on a different brand of oil filter or not?

No, used a Pure One on the previous change as well. Still not sure if I heard it or not. Previous oil was MC 5W-20 and I just don't recall hearing it. Plus, it used a 1/2 quart during this oci. Watching closely.

Daughters Honda has clatter with first 2 OCI's of Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. Now just normal. The dealer says PP is highly recommended and the cold noise is normal for Hondas.

I have no problem using 5W-20, and will continue to use it. And I'm really not that concerned at this point. Just wondering if there is indeed a difference between the MC and the PP as far as valve train noise, plus using oil like it did.

This 5W-20 is causing your engine to wear out nonsense is getting old. There is no evidence for it. In fact, have a look at the recent UOA for my Honda V-6 I posted a few days ago. If that is excessive wear than I am all for it!

Ummm, who said anything about 5W-20 wearing anything out?

All I said was I heard more valve noise, and it definitely used a 1/2 quart where it didn't before. But it's always had 5W-20, just a different brand.

My car parked outside in 30 degree weather & made startup clatter in the AM during winter. Went away once car was warm.

Now that I've parked inside again since April. No Clatter.
Not sure if its valves, pistons or belt noise.

just changed my oil. I had Mobil 1 5w30 prior. I just put in some Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 (Walmart $20 5quart jug)and she is quieter and smoother at idle. I also went from 2 Baldwin B2s to 2 Pure One PL30001 synthetic media.
Oil pressure is few pounds higher at idle (20lbs) when engine and oil is fully warmed, but guess because its new.

Merkava 4 told you 5W20 is wearing out your valve guides. Maybe if you're lucky 06VtecV6 will also share his expertise with you.

I had the same occurence with my junk Baldwin B2s. That company makes two grades of filters for passenger vehicles. The better one that cost more...ie... (silicon versions)... improved my idle oil pressure with my S-10 4.3 engine.

I was going to get the the B2-HPG, but didn't have a couple of days to wait for it to be shipped to me (had tonsils removed, so out of commission). Never had any issues with Baldwin B2 though. I did however have a Wix 51515 in my transmission remote and had to go back to my Baldwin, because she was shifting slower than normal. I did want a good filter to compliment my oil, so I bought the Pure Ones with the synthetic media.
Sorry you had a bad batch of B2s..they are very good filters, and well made.

2600 miles on my first fill of Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20. Everything is looking and sounding great. The waranty will expire in another 2000 miles, so I might switch over to 5w30 for the summer months. All depends on what 06VtecV6 has to say....where could he be?
