Someone here mentioned that the Platinum bottle they shook at Walmart sounded/felt like water. Hmmm maybe Pennzoil waters down their oils so they can sell them cheaper to WalMart?

So you think Pennzoil knowingly sent out a bad batch of oil, and Walmart tested it and sold it anyway? Doesn't sound right for a company that makes billions each year.

lol... you guys should be members of the many conspiracy forums out there. Now, I'm a recovering conspiracy theorist, so I know where you're coming from. But come on..

Can't believe people actually took my post seriously. wow.

Not that wal-mart doesnt have a history of selling subpar merchandise... but come on!

Id love to know Walmarts policies on how they select clearance merchandise and how they price. The Walmarts in my area are crazy off on all prices. I bought camping chairs at one for $9 and at the next they were $19. I bought a Therma cell for $11 at one and at another they were $24.88. These aint little price gaps and the stores are 5 miles apart.

Yep. SPC stops anything from leaving the place without meeting spec. They'll rework the batch or use it somewhere else where it works.

The only problem I've ever seen was in terms of improper labeling. That is, the hook up at the worm farm to the bottling setup was mismatched. I've never encountered it with Amsoil, but ..and this was in the distant past, we got ATF cans (they were the size of grease tubes, but were just like cardboard metal end oil cans) that had motor oil in them.

They look at the shelf space and how the item sells. How long was it there and how it sells compared to other stores (esp in the area)

If its performance is below the average, the item will be marked down and sold.

That is why one store will have something and another one will not. Or one will have it at one price and another lower.

It's working for them... WELL!

I got some today at my local store near Seattle. Same as most....$28. Will be putting it in the girlfriends Grand Marquis for a six month period. I am curious if any difference will be noted (I doubt it....I have Red Line in her car now).

What part of the second comment is false? Please provide proof to the contrary.

Obviously any comment on oil could only at best be speculation regardless... grain of salt perhaps? And I didnt even post it as speculation.

But again, give proof to the contrary if you are going to make a deal of it. Ill then retract my post.

Maybe since sales were low last month, they are getting rid of it. I strongly suspect whoever makes the clearance decisions doesn't have a clue about oil quality.

Unlike others here, I'm NOT going to make this thread into a Walmart bashing thread like happend above. (or another bashing something like most of the other threads on this board has become)

We can tell that you dislike Walmart so we will leave it at that. But your statement above "stands" on its own.

I'd say that the lower cost Ultra was a ERROR.

Those are made at times.

IIRC Walmart did a recall on SuperTech ATF or Gear fluid or some other fluids last year after the state of California did a test and found that it did not meet the specs. But, in general I don't think they are knowingly selling sub-par products, i.e., M1 at WM is lesser quality than M1 at anywhere else.

Basically? Cost. The Grand Marquis takes 6 quarts. I also figure that with the style and amount of driving the vehicle typically gets, Red Line is way over the top. I'm hurting a bit for money right now as well (like most folks). When times get better I'll go back to it if I feel a need.

Ask Mobil Ask Mobil
Is the Mobil 1 Sold in Jugs at Wal-Mart the Same Quality as the Product in Quart Bottles Sold Elsewhere?

Ask Your Stickiest Question. . . Or ask us something you’ve always wanted to know about using our products. We’ll sort through all the submissions and present the best questions to our automotive experts. We'll share the questions and their answers here.

Question:
Is the Mobil 1 Sold in Jugs at Wal-Mart the Same Quality as the Product in Quart Bottles Sold Elsewhere?
I have a question about the 5-quart Mobil 1 jugs I buy at Walmart. Is the oil in the 5-quart Mobil 1 5w30 jugs the exact same oil that is in the 1-quart containers sold elsewhere? I ask because I have heard that the Walmart gets a cheaper formulation made to their specs in order to allow them to sell for less and you do not get the same quality of oil when you buy it. When I compared the labeling on the 1-quart containers at Advance Auto Parts to the 5-quart jug I got at Wal-Mart, I noticed that the 1-quart container says ACEA A1/A5 B1/B5 and the 5-quart does not say ACEA at all. Both have the HTO-06 and are, I believe, both API SM and ILSAC GF-4. Frankly, I doubt that any company would risk their reputation by packaging a different product for a chain store under the same name but I thought I would ask.

Answer:
You are right, the formulation and quality level of our motor oils are the same wherever the product name is the same, regardless of the package size in which it is sold. The difference in ACEA claims you are referring to sounds unfamiliar to us. Was it the exact same product in both cases?

I think the burden is on the skeptics to provide some factual basis for their assertions.

It sounds like nothing more than crazy-talk unless you pull two VOAs.

I'll place my bets that not only will the VOA results be the same, but people's mouths are bigger than their wallets, and none here will actually do the lab work which proves them wrong.

Hey, if you prove something bad about WalMart you'd be a hero and probably get on TV.

Still, noone will do it.
