Remember this stuff? Sperm oil as also a popular additive for hypoid lubes back in the day.

So is pennzoil getting it on the black market?

PS waiting on the "thicker is better" crowd to seize other parts of this TSB.

You don't have to use sperm whale oil. Instead of sperm whale oil they use plant material from various plants such as rapeseed and produce a substance that is similar to sperm whale oil in performance.

Notice the date? It was back in the 1970s. That is ancient history.

Sperm oil is a natural high VI ester, which is why it was a key ingredient in early ATFs.

Again, look at the date on that document. In the USA sperm whale hunting was outlawed. There are there a few countries that hunt whales.

They don't use sperm whale oil anymore. Lubegard found a way to use various plant substances to replace sperm whale oil.

I have pretty much come to the conclusion myself that Johnny is right and nobody really needs oil supplements. Perhaps nonsolvent engine flushes like Amsoil Engine and Transmission Flush might be good for a dirty engine.

I did get some good results with a Lubegard power steering supplement product. I have not totally given up on Lubegard products. There are a few oil supplements, and not many, that I might be willing to use.

But yes, the best thing for somebody to do is start with high quality motor oil. Nobody can go wrong that way.

A little "OT" but back in the 70's when I worked in a special gearing Speed Reducer plant, in our bulk lube room was a tank with the label Sperm Oil on it. I asked our foreman about it, and was told that up until recently, they did use oil derived from sperm whales for machining and cutting purposes.

I wonder how the Whales felt about it???

I do not think the whales had any choice about it. Besides, the whales feelings were never considered.

Me bad.

History lesson for today: Back before Tom Edison invented the incandesant light bulb, the main source of lighting was the oil lamp. Prior to 1859 when Col. Drake drilled his first well near Titusville PA, the oil used in all those oil lamps was sperm whale oil. Whaling was big business in the early history of America. In addition, it was widely used in early machine lubrication. GM was presented with a dilemma in replacing whale oil in their first Type "A" ATF when it became illegal to kill the sperm whale. Most countries have signed on to the treaty that prevents the killing of sperm whales. A little browsing on the net will reveal those that do not.FWIW--Oldtommy

Companies like Lubegard tried to duplicate sperm whale oil using various kinds of plants. Sperm whale oil was a miracle lubricate in actual fact. It helped many early automatic transmissions last much longer and perform better. And then rightly sperm whale hunting was banned by most countries, including the USA.
