I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel. I'm considering switching to synthetics in the tranny (G56 manual), transfer case, and diffs. I went to the local dealer and they said that the factory fill in the tranny and transfer case was ATF+4 which IS synthetic. And the factory fill in the diffs was Mopar 75-90, also a synthetic. Is that correct? If it is, then why do so many forum posters seem to think that they need to change their factory fills to synthetics? Do they just not know that the Mopar factory fills are synthetics?

I suspect that what the local dealer told you may not be exactly true, far as the ATF+4 is concerned anyhow. It is more likely a partial synthetic..
Yes, the gear lube is synthetic. Take a look at the AMSOIL Gear Lube study, and compare the test results of the Mopar stuff with some of the others on the market. Remember, the OEMs will change suppliers for a few cents a gallon difference.

I think that word 'some' needs to be added.
And, without a good additive package, basestock advantage leans towards........
Factory fill doesn't last forever. So, dumping it early is a smart move. Now, why bother going to the dealer when there are plenty of other brands of fluid that can work just as well or better?

I think that you need to take a look at what I said again. I did not say do, I said can.
Some companies even have the skill to turn PAO blends into something bad.
You are correct it does have to be a good add pack but it also needs a good formulator.

I agree with undummy on this point. You can get an good ATF+4 fluid around 3.50 a qt. Mopar ATF+4 is 5.00 a qt around here.

Mopar licensed the ATF+4 formulation out. It monitors those that make it for quality assurance. Any ATF+4 you see on the shelf is going to be legit.
