I have been reading posts in other forums on the net, some people claim the trans fliuds as being the same. Anybody have any real proof.

Is that a new spec from Kia? I thought they used SP-III transmission fluid. It's night and day from ATF+4. Only fluid I'd use in a Kia/Hyundai automatic transmission is SP-III or Amsoil universal ATF.

No worries. If you're still under warranty, check the Mitsubishi dealers for SP-III. Often they carry it slightly cheaper than Kia or Hyundai dealers.

There are stories floating around the Hyundai boards of people who have killed their transmissions by putting in Dex/Merc fluids or anything but SP-III or Amsoil.

So it is ok by warranty standards to use other brands of SP-III?
I was going to use Hyundai SPIII on a Mitsubishi Eclipse and the customer flipped out that I wasn't using OEM mitsubishi fluid. He said that 'what do you mean it's the same thing, Hyundai is Korean and Mitsubishi is Japanese, why would they use the same fluid?' He was really angry.

I know better and I use Hyundai SPIII in Hyundais, Kias and Mitsubishis when they call for it. I don't see the problem.

I use ATF+4 in any Kia, Hyundai, or Mitsu requiring SPIII. No damper clutch issues yet. And, seems to me that those transmissions last longer without SPIII.

Any universal or multivehicle ATF that mentions the SPIII spec can also be used. I do prefer full synthetic.

As long as it's SP-III they don't care who makes it.

My personal opinion is that SP-III is a poor fluid they force you to use. It oxidises quickly above 195* F or so and breaks down rapidly. People have seen SP-III go bad within 10k miles.

So change often!

The Amsoil universal fluid which they claim meets the SP-III spcification has been in my transmission for the last 50K KM (30K Miles) and still looks like the day I filled the transmission.

It also shifts very nice with it, so I'm sticking with it.

That's like saying you cannot use Motorcraft 5W-20 in a Toyota that specs 5W-20, because Ford is American and Toyota is Japanese!

Bet he doesn't even know his Eclipse is built in USA. Dear Lord, people can be so ignorant!

It's been in my transmission for 25,000 km now (16,000 miles). Got another 15,000 km (9,500 miles) to go before I change it. No complaints and it's still cherry red.
