For conventional rear wheel drive cars, somewhere in the +600 HP range is about all that is practical on the street. Even with sticky street-legal drag tires, traction becomes the limiting factor.

Sure, on a drag strip or track, extra traction may exist, and the nice HP can easily be used there. Otherwise, enjoy tire spin.

At launch, sure.
A 100 mph or so, not so much.

And where can that be done on public roads? Like I said, 800+ HP cars have no place on public streets. These cars, plus the senseless idiots who will try to use all of that HP (and there are plenty of idiots out there with more money than sense) equals disaster...

Unfortunately there will always be idiots that will try to use it in the streets and not at the track. But for others respectful of the streets the HP number is about bragging rights. That said I'm fine with the almost 300 HP in my soccer-mom mobile.

Maybe if I put some Dodge Demon or Heck-cat badges on it I can make it go faster.

Being an idiot is a choice and most certainly doesn't require 800+HP. On Friday, on my way home from the office, a guy tried to drift his Nissan Altima into Taco Bell at about 70Km/h on a residential street. Took up all four lanes, if there had been oncoming traffic it would have been a major accident. He well over-shot his target and ended up in front of TD Bank, pointing the other direction.

I see far, FAR more idiots driving vans and econoboxes; carving traffic like they are doing Formula 1, than I do driving high HP monsters.

That's because there are far more of those on the road...imagine those idiots driving a 1000 HP whatever...

The result would likely be the same in most circumstances. About the only difference might be them going in the rhubarb due to tire spin overtaking somebody. But winter tends to be a great equalizer in that department. 40HP or 400, trying to pass on snowy roads like a moron with bald tires is a recipe for disaster.

In the vast majority of cases, these idiots aren't in a position to procure something with that level of power though. So they drive like a moron in whatever they have. Bro-dozers with windshield-level bumpers are a far greater worry for me than the possibility that somebody with poor driving skills or attitude is going to buy a Hellcat. Those guys are EVERYWHERE, with >7,000lbs of steel feet off the ground driving like morons.

I haven't had any problems yet, with my car that puts nearly 1000 hp to the ground. Or my much faster motorcycle that puts nearly 300 hp to the ground...

Grampi, why is it you are alway so concerned about other drivers and how they drive or what they drive? I am not trying to be a smart a** here, but it is clear to me you have some type of underlying condition or an experience that haunts you.

I am unsure what that is, exactly, it's none of my business, but I strongly suggest you get some help for it. Thread and post after post about driving related issues proves that, imo, some counselling might be in order.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I truly believe, based on your past posts and threads, that you look for situations to get involved in or likely greater, still, look for situations where you can start something just so you can gripe about it.

It comes from driving 3000 miles a month and having to deal with all of the idiots on the roads these days. Spending as much time as I do driving I see a lot of bad drivers. My help will come in the form of my retirement (in 1.5 years), then I won't be spending much time on the roads at all. Then most of my driving will be pleasure cruising in my Corvette...

I don't side with grampi, I really don't care what other drivers do. I also drive a lot, but as long as I'm not at risk, others can do what they want. In the last week, I've done 3000++ miles, with a FL-PA trip and back, plus 3 FL-GA trips and back. Completely uneventful. I even had the V10 powered U-Haul truck and trailer over 100MPH downhill (just kidding grampi)
smile.gif
(it was speed limited to about 70)

Back to the HP thing. Traction remains a problem at anything over 600HP. I drove a McLaren F1, which, on a cold day, would spin both it's huge rear tires at any speed under 80. Making it a real handful as it had no traction control to reign in the bad behavior. The Ferrari Enzo with the same HP had traction control and while not as fast as the F1, it was much less of a handful (a good thing) and in some ways a lot less fun.

Are you a trucker or a delivery type of guy, Grampi? I can understand what you see and go through but I still think you look for it and create issues yourself occasionally as well.
No disrespect intended, just my observations based on your numerous driving types of threads/posts.

Personally, if I were you and want to see retirement, I'd change my driving habits and forget about the A holes out there that you despise so much. I bet there is not one member on this site who doesn't encounter at least one everyday.

It's pretty well known that you have a section of country four lane blocked off by your buds in the small hours of the morning when no other sober people are out and about and you do a car versus car high speed roll-on. You're in your Lambo and I'm in my sleeper Imperial with Hellephant.
Guess who wins?
May not be legal, but it does happen.

With the right tires, I manage pretty well. With any high performance vehicle, you need to have a good understanding of your abilities, the vehicles abilities, the condition of the road surface, and your surroundings.

A packed Interstate at rush hour, is not the time or place to explore any limits.

No, I live in one state, and work in another. I don't know how changing my driving habits is going to correct all of the a-holes I encounter on the roads. I drive like I'm supposed to. The only thing I could do differently is stay off the roads, and that isn't an option for me...

I was coming out of a construction zone in Flint a couple of days ago, and almost had the nose of my car taken off by a guy that was accelerating hard and slaloming through traffic that was exceeding the speed limit anyway.
He was driving a Challenger. (Didn't have enough time to see what the badges were.)
Then he got off at the next exit about a mile down the road. So how much time did Roger Ramjet really save with his little right foot temper tantrum?
Did he feel like he beat everybody on the road, even though none of them were racing him anyway?

Oh man!
How about the fact that someone might just want one, afford one and enjoy one? C'mon officer Funkill McOnlysensible. It's nice to be able to have something special.

The twinscrew supercharger on the Dodge Hellcat is the same as the one on my E55. For memory I think it puts out 9.5psi boost. It's common for people to put a smaller pulley on the E55 to spin it faster increasing to I think 14psi. Reasonably easy power with a few other necessary mods (like cooling etc).

The thought of a smaller pulley on this monster is and just 'upping the boost' is just crazy!

Also, did I read correctly that it is to be fitted to pre- 1970 cars? That'd work those drum brakes! ...‚
