Hello,

I'm currently breaking in my 09 Subaru STi and I changed the factory filled oil out at around 1000 KM and replaced it with Pennzoil YB 5w30. Since the engine is quite fresh out the oven I'd like to add a bit of Moly additive into the new oil, does anyone know which ones can be bought? sepecifically in Canada?

Does anyone know if Comp Cams Break in Oil is an Moly additive?

Thank You!

Eddie

Wouldn't moly stop/reduce your break-in wear of the rings? Or is that what you are after even at this early mileage?

Why not use an oil like Shaeffers or Redline that already have Moly in it vs. an additive?

I don't think you need an additve for break in. Shorter oci's and a good high quality oil that meets specs are all you need. The shorter oci's may not even be nessacary.

Oh really? I just thought that my Factory Fill has significantly more Moly in their oil that is why I thought of adding more back in. So you think 60-120ppm is enough moly?

Yes I do. If you want to use Red Line Oil I would wait until about 5K (that's miles) before using it.

I'm not suggesting to use redline or shaeffers for break in. I would use whatever your manual suggests whether that is dino or synthetic (dino vs. synthetic for break in =

#1). And you'll probably get a lot of good opinions here (probably including opinions on when to change out factory fill

#2 ) but yours is already changed.

I was only pointing out that there are oils with high moly in them if that is what you are after rather than using an additive.

Tempest: I'm really not sure, as I had no data on my factory fill but I'm simply asking whether or not Johnny felt that 60-120ppm is enough that's all.

kj1225, want an additive that's proven its usefulness to reduce wear? Try Schaeffer M-132:

Moly content isn't as high as the title suggests, but the whole combination of additives within it really produce some spectacular UOAs ... including my last one (and I only used 1/2 bottle with 4 quarts of oil).

However, as with others here, I recommend merely giving your car frequent oil and filter changes in the first 10,000-12,000 miles. I'm thinking a couple 2,000-2,5000 mile intervals, then stretching that to 3,000-3,5000 mile intervals.

I might also use a top cylinder lubricant such as Schaeffer Neutra, Marvel Mystery Oil, Lucas UCL or Fuel Power every other tankful for the first several months to ensure slow, even seating of rings.

redline break in additive has tons of zinc and phos but no moly and it is a synthetic....i would use lubegards bio tech engine treatment alone with the redline or you can add torco's mpz additive loads of moly.comp cam has little additive in it very weak.

Hilarious advice on the synthetic oil during break in. Especially considering how many cars are shipped new with it in them!

But I agree with the mototune guy. Break it in hard and it'll run better for longer.

I vehemently disagree with the mototune guy-no hard break ins-no more than half throttle once in a while up to 1 K miles. Then get into it oa few times-no redlining until 2 K miles.

I broke my car in the moto-man way, and at 100k it still doesn't have any appreciable oil consumption. I've never heard anyone buggering their motor using his method either. Let it warm up, then put the hammer down and get those rings sealed up!
