Moly... who believes in it?

Moly makes me happy. I like moly-laced oils especially of the Schaeffer variety but do relize there are other oils that don't enjoy the benifits of moly and still protect very well.
As for me and my house; We shall use Moly. I think most all oils could be made better with the proper use of Moly. It should not be abused or subsequent doses will be higher by neccesity. A long-term test of an oil with no moly then tests with the same oil with a quality moly additive included would be interesting. I'm thinking an oil like GC with a good dose of moly...

Comparing RT and delo UOA's, I've noticed rotella tends to oxidize a lot more.

One of the main differences between these oils is that rotella doesn't have moly.

I don't think all moly oils are created equal and the better ones such as Schaeffer can run blends and dino oil for long intervals with success becouse of their expertise using high-quality moly and blending it with other additives. I think a well-made moly oil can offer extra protection in critical wear ereas such as cam lobes.
Obviously you don't need moly to have a great oil but I think it can make a great oil just a little bit better.

I feel cheated!
Paying Aus$11.00/litre for Delvac 1 Synthetic, and it hasn't got any moly in it!

Probably expense is the reason at $3500US for a 200 pound drum of the moly stuff!

So....to my new question!

Is there an "affordable" fully synthetic oil WITH MOLY thats suited to use in high shear environments like the 7.3 PSD with HEUI HPOP oil systems, thats readily available downunder?

Seeing I run LPG gas with diesel - should I also have an oil with higher sulphated ash content to help avoid valve seat regression?

Again - if so.... back to my original question...

Is there, etc etc downunder - that ALSO has an elevated sulphated ash content?

The Pennzoil dino deisel long life I was using before I swapped to the Delvac 1 synthetic - USED to have moly in it , before it became rotella repackaged & it is a medium ash oil!

This oil bidness all seemes to be half azzed to me!

Soon we will have to be blending our own!

Cheers!

I may be wrong, but I think The Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w-40 has some Moly in it. Do a search for it in the VOA section and see if it has been checked.

I think you may find what you are looking for in a Delo Synthetic HDEO I looked on the ChevronDelo site and couldn't find any info on Australian Delo brands- but check that out. Delo overseas where you are should be close to what we have in North America. They usually have a decent shot of moly. I have some Delo 5W40 that is pretty much the same as the 15W40, but in Group III with about the same additive pack.

As for moly, it does have benefits in engine oils. It is extreemly tough, heat resistant and causes little in the way of trouble. I use it at 10% in gear cases on my motorcycle added to GL-5 oils.

I do not add it to the engine oil. I assume Exxon-Mobil knows what to add to their Mobil 1 15W-50 engine oil I use in the motorcycle. I hope there is some in there however.

Dennis,

What moly add are you using to add to your gear oils, etc? Has it made a noticeable improvement in any way? And are you using the newer red cap 15W-50 Mobil 1 or the gold cap stuff? I saw lots of people moving away from the gold cap- I think that's why they brought the other stuff back.
