http://www.troubleshooter.com/ConsumerInformation/ColumnDetails.cfm?ColumnID=524 Ok I did 2 mold tests after all the hurricanes we had.I know I made some mistakes by not watching the repairs being done more closly. If the water leaks I had didn't dry out and mold formed in the walls or insulation mold may have taken hold.Question is where is it and what type and how much. We all have been having symptoms of being sick for a long time and do I simply spray bleach in the walls. Or do I get a pro out here to sniff out the trouble. My Insurance should pay for it as part of the damage from the New roof. Will they fight me on this issue

If mold were a problem for me the first thing I would do is find a professional. Some types of mold are not a big problem, other types are a significant health issue. The only way to know for sure is a pro.

A professional also knows other abatement procedures that may not be available to the general public should it be needed.

As an industrial hygienist, I can tell you that mold is a very difficult subject to grapple. One of the more significant concerns is that there are no regulatory standards for mold assessment or abatement. This is for two reasons. 1. science on mold is immature, and 2. not everybody is affected. There is no dose response curve, and this makes it particularly problematic. That said, there are industrial hygienists that specialize in mold assessment, and there are contractors that specialize in mold abatement.

If you are considering sampling for mold yourself, make sure you get a kit that can identify the mold species that is most often implicated in causing adverse health effects caused by mycotoxins: Stachybotrys . These kits are commonly available but provide you only with very basic information (e.g., presence or absence of). Mold abatement is expensive and generally consists of eliminating the source of water intrusion and removing the contaminated building materials (i.e., construction). Good luck.
