Greetings,

I wish to do some cleaning on my 2000 Dodge Neon (89,000 miles on vechicle). I am about 1,300 miles into my Auto-Rx rinse cycle and thought that the soak would be a nice way to finish things up.

The problem is that I can't get LC here in Germany, and I feel very certain that is can not be shipped due to postal regulations.

Question: What solvent would be a good alternative for use in soaking my combustion chamber?

I can get Mopar CCC at the local dealer. Is Mopar CCC too aggressive for the soak? Additionally, all Motul products are available here. I have noted that using LC one would soak overnight. Perhaps a less gentle solvent means I should remove excess fluid and fire up the engine in a few hours rather than overnight?

I learn so much from this site!

Thank you,

Jeff

Jeffry any strong solvent product will work. I use a product called B12 Cheemtool wich is basicly a carburator cleaner in liquid form instead of aerosol. Tolune,Benzene,Napthalene, MEK type solvents will work. The more solvents in the mix the better. I would imagine that Diamler/Chrysler Combustion Chamber Cleaner would work as well. Remember you are not realy cleaning the catbon you are disoolveing what ever is being used to glue it to the part on the bonding agent is weaked the carbon can be expelled out the exhaust and into the old oil.

Great! I can get the B12 product at my base exchange.

I still intend to get the Mopar CCC and follow the instructions for flooding the engine with it through the throttle body.

Thanks.

Jeffry, If you can get some chemical resistance gloves too. If you have to see if you can borrow a pair from the motor pool! You really should try to limit how much solvent youget on your skin. I have a lot of skin problems from over exposure to solvents as a young man!! My hands are really bad for a 31 year old. B12 does have cancer causeing chemicals in it. Also try to avoid getting it on paint etc..... It is good stuff though for cleaning. I have seen carbon melt off of valve stems after a 10 minute soak in the stuff!!

P.S. What part of Germany are stationed at. I spent 14 years in Germany. Dad was a lifer!

Why do a "soak" with solvent? Don't you realise the danger to that?! (swollen seals will tear/cause leaks)

Just go with the full course of AutoRx and leave the poor engine alone.

p.s. never soak an engine (inside/outside) with any forms of solvent esp. when there's polymer seals in it.

Well, I decided to do this because I had read so much about it from the guys here at BITOG. Evidently the idea is that there are some areas of carbon deposit that Auto-rx doesn't get to.

See these:

The indication from those posts is that a piston soak with the right cleaner and procedure will only help the engine.

Wow. I hadn't even thought of this. Thanks for the caution. I can get the gloves from my wife the science teacher.

I am stationed in Baumholder, Germany. However, I am not military. I am a teacher at the DOD school in Baumholder. It is a great life, and working with military dependants is a million times better than having to work at a large, state-side public school. If I had to return to work at a state-side public school then I would probably look for a different form of employment.
