Does anyone have an opinion on Mobile Dexron VI? Or would there be better product?

Needed for transmission and transfer case on 07 Silverado Vmax.

I would not be suprized with Mobil DEX VI is the factory fill for GM. EOM produces some of the highest quaility lubricants in the business. I am just not a fan, but you can use it no problem.

Hi Erin,
I'm assuming your transmission is an automatic ?
If so I would suggest the new Amsoil ATL (yes L) which will cover your Dexron VI need & is a full synthetic.
I'm running this in a 2010 Chevy Colorado & have been looking into quite a few fluids for the Dexron VI spec. The Mobil Dexron VI is a synthetic blend which is what the factory GM stuff is.

Unfortunately I'm a 2WD type guy & can't reccomend anything for the transfer case. I'm sure if you post again & give the spec that the manufacturer reccommends some one with that type of knowledge will chime in.
Good Luck !

Transmission went out at 44,000 (internal seal failure)and was replaced with factory rebuilt. My warranty was extended to cover the transmission to 100,000.

If I would switch to Amsoil, Redline, or any others would this effect my warranty? Or would the dealer need to prove my choice of lubricants was the cause of the failure?

Full-synthetic, huh? Wonder how much temp difference there would be from blend to full synthetic?

I thought that GM's powertrain warranty covered you until 100K anyway ?
They may ask you for a receipt/proof of purchasing an "approved" fluid; it depends on the dealer...hard to say. If there was another failure (lets hope not & not likely) I would just stay away from the fluid issue. Plus when they install a transmission(2006&up) it is filled with GM Dexron VI & is not required to be changed for 100K miles (50K miles under severe useage) this would cover you until 94K to 144K miles without requiring you to change the fluid & have a receipt.
The full synthetic will give you a wider temperature range of protection, run at bit cooler, and maybe a taste better mpg.
The Mobil & GM/Delco fluids are syn-blends & are "approved". Amsoil & Redline are synthetics & are not "approved".
This just means that they haven't been submmited & paid for testing & licensing $$$.

Yes, because none of these are licensed by GM. Only a fluid that meets (is licensed by GM) Dexron-VI spec will for-sure cover your warranty.

Very little.

Why on earth would you consider using an unlicensed and apparently therefore untested product, in favour of the 100 or so genuinely approved products which have gone through the correct and rigorous approval process? Obviously, that's your choice, but to me, it makes no sense.

Why would GM sell transmissions that have internal seals fail with that so-called superior licensed ATF in only 44k miles?

Erin, if you do stick with a DexronVI, then change it out every 30k. Any of the name brand fluids will suffice. I don't trust the GM police with enforcing the quality of every quart of fluid on every shelf, and tend to rely on brand reputation. So, the Mobil, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castrol... ATF's are some brands that I'd use.

If you want to use an ATF over 30k, install a full flow ATF filter to remove the wear that tears into seals and bores and bearings and clutch bands and....

Red Line D6 ATF

I don't know about "better", but the Red Line will stay in grade a lot longer than a non-synthetic or synthetic blend Dexron VI.

Hmmmmmmmm ......

A "Vmax"? Yamaha made one.
Gm? Dmax.

Any licensed Dex VI from the big brand names will do a decent job. OCI on a regular reasonable basis and you'll be fine.

Vmax is the VortecMax package. 6.0L 367hp, 4L70E, rear disc, 9.25 rear diff. All on 1/2 ton chassis. Perfect for towing or offroad. And with a little help from Black Bear Performance fun on the street.

What data do you have to support that statement?

Take a look at the url I posted.

"Rather than beginning with a 7.5 cSt fluid and allowing a viscosity loss in use to drop to 5.5 cSt, the Dexron VI fluid requires a starting viscosity of less than 6.4 and a final drop to no less than 5.5 cSt. Red Line D6 will drop to no less than 6.1 cSt."

A full synthetic will resist viscosity breakdown better than a non-synthetic.

Im kind of in the same boat as the OP. Im looking to change out all my fluids in my 08 Silverado 1500 4x4. I want to go full synthetic in the tranfer case and the transmission. The owners manual calls for "DEXRON-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid" for both. Id like to find one that is locally available in stores. Been looking at the Valvoline Dex-VI Full Syn. Wise choice? Whats everyone opinion?

So can someone tell me the Redline DEXRON-VI approval licence number so that I can check it out with SPO?

Yeah, wouldn't it be under warrenty still? And why would it be replaced with a rebuild unit? Shouldn't it be a new GM unit?

I asked about new vs. rebuild. Service manager stated that he can not even order a new transmission. Only transmission available was rebuild. If your transmission is shot under warranty you get a rebuilt one. Hey, they gave a new transmission warranty. So, now I am good to 144,000 miles.
