The EMA, oil companies and regulators are basically all on board that the viscosity under high temp-high shear (HTHS) is inversely correlated with fuel economy.
Right now I know that Cummins has approved oils with as low as 3.5HTHS and have seen field data and fuel trial data for some of those oils. Something like 2 - 4% FE increase is possible. More like 2% for an all highway vehicle. If I was paying my own fuel bills for a trucking operation, I would go for the new fuel-efficient 5w30 heavy-duty engine oils. Look for one meeting Cummins 20081
Adding Lucas can't do anything good for high-quality oil - excessively thickening the oil accelerates cold-start wear and increases drag on the engine.
