If the new Mobile 1 Extended Life formula is being sold as a 15,000 mile drain interval, then what do you do filter wise? Is the extended life filter supposed to last that long as well, or do you change the filter twice during the 15,000 mile interval?

Doesn't Mobil say to change the filter at the interval spec'ed for a filter change in your owner's manual?

In the owners manual of my 1992 GM 3.1L V6 engine, the manual says change the filter every 15k miles. So essentially every oil change for me.

No. Here's what the Mobil 1 EP FAQ says:

If I go longer between oil change intervals, do I need to change my oil filter more frequently? Or do I need a special filter?

Continue to change your oil filter when you change your engine oil. Special filters, or more frequent oil filter changes are not required.

However, Mobil 1 Oil Filters provide outstanding performance during longer oil change intervals. Mobil 1 Oil Filters are designed to offer excellent efficiency (remove more engine oil impurities) and high capacity (60 percent greater capacity than conventional oil filters), which make them ideal candidates for longer oil change intervals.

I can't believe a filter, especially one that's as tiny as the one on my '05 Corolla can go 15K miles.

Colt,

Exactly what do you expect to be getting caught in the filter?
Assuming we go by used oil analysis, your car will have, at most, 100 PPM wear metals and maybe another 20 PPM of silicon. So out of your 3.75 qts of oil, you will have 120 PPM, or .12%, of matter that needs filtered.
One liquid quart is 57.75 cubic inches.
The 1ZFE engine has an oil capacity of 3.75 quarts .
3.75 times 57.75 times .0012 equals approximately .26 cubic inches.
Assuming that filter has a capacity of .26 cubic inches, 4.2 ml or .14 fluid ounces you're straight.
