Thanks Brian. If Pep Boys did have 5w40, I would have gotten some. The Dana 35 currently has Royal Purple in there. Good stuff! At the time I put it in there, 75w90 was what was recommended. I didn't know I had towing package at the time so I didn't figure I'd need the 75w140 but I don't tow, yet. The Towing will be 300 miles in August, after the roadtrip, when I move into my apartment here in Baton Rouge. It's mostly level driving. Our 94 ZJ had a 35 in the rear and didn't even get synthetic and it went 140K miles with no problems.

In many locations Wal Mart now sells Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40 in 5 quart jugs for $19.97. I believe after many problems with the Dana 35c axles Chrysler started recommending thicker synthetic lube, maybe around 2000 or so.

I know but I have Pep Boys coupons for Buy 3 Quarts of Mobil 1, get 3 Free. I found a way that I can order 0w40 from them.
Ok, I'll be the guinea pig.
I have a 5 month old little girl which leaves me little time for much else. She's the sweetest baby ever! Of course I'm a little biased. Anyway, to keep from crawling under the car too often I switched my '03 Mazda MPV to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. It's been running Mobil 1 0w20 & 5w30 since 5000 miles and I switched to EP at 35k. I bought this van new. I bought an '01 Suburban last fall with 45k on it. I ran the recommended Arx treatment and at 50k I switched it to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. Now both of my rides are running EP. The oil in the Burb is clean and clear after 2000 miles, even w/Arx in it. I figure it's a clean engine. I plan on 10k intervals. I hope to UOA this first round and if it looks good maybe go 12-15k. I need 200-250k+ out of these vehicles but I'm not worried about Mobil 1 Extended Performance letting me down. I would love to pop a head one day and see for myself how clean these engines stay. This is of course after the 250k mark and the rest of the vehicle has gone to crap.

I've been running these sorts of service intervals for the past 27 years with excellent results. There is nothing experimental or risky about it at all, providing you use an ACEA, A3/B4 or A5/B5 quality, PAO/Ester synthetic and high efficiency air/oil filters. I will continue to repeat this statement until all the 3000 mile oil change "Luddites" have been converted ...
You will start to see significant oxidative thickening in the Burb if you extend the service intervals much past 10,000 miles, due to the # of fuel you burn in this vehicle. The more fuel efficient Mazda van should be good for the full 15,000 miles/1 year. If you were willing to install an oversized oil pan (7.5-8.0 quarts) on the big block Chevy, you could run 15k-25k oil change intervals in that motor as well....
At least that has been my experience with synthetic lubes in these types of applications.

Another thing about the burb is that it gets driven a lot less than the van. I drive 21 miles each way to work @ 55 most of the way. We drive it nights and weekends too. In 23 months we've put nearly 37k on it. The burb gets run a few times during the week and the trips tend to be shorter. We bought it for loading up with family and friends and to eventually tow a small camper and maybe a boat. I'm worried that with it sitting for 2-3 days between runs that the oil life may be shortened. In 6-7 months we've put 5k so I'm thinking 10k or 1 year OCI on it.
I went into Advanced Auto Parts again today (different one where I bought the RL) and the store manager said they are selling a ton of the new Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I was surprised actually. I noticed the 5w30 grade and 10w30 were almost out. That is when I asked him.

Put it this way, the reason the PDS are not out yet is bc they are hung up in the legal department. That is what I was told by Matt, one of Mobil's reps. It's not easy to do what they are doing and you better believe they want to cover their @sses.
Was in another Autozone today looking for the new Mother's Reflections wax and both slots of Mobil 1 Extended Performance were empty. Looks like they are really moving this oil. I wonder if people are actually grabbing on to the idea that they can go longer then 4k miles on their oil?
Honda engineers recommend using filters for a double oil change interval, or 20,000 miles. In years past, several manufacturers have recommended a filter change every other oil change, or 15,000 miles. Are Honda engineers dumb, or what?quote:

I also think people will put this oil in their beater that they rarely change the oil in anyways. They will then blame Mobil when they have a problem.
