So I just spotted Mobil 1 0w30 and 0w-40 in walmart for $20. Im thinking its what Ill be doing my next oil change with.

I've got a 2007 volvo s40 and the manual recommends castrol 0w-30, Id imagine that is only because it would meet euro specifications.

I have never seen GC in my area, so im thinking the Mobil 1 0w-40 would be good enough (as its also euro formula). However the 0w30 would most likely save some gas and the car is speced for it.

Would 0w30 be a better idea?
 
Does Mobil 1 0w30 meet all the specs for your Volvo?

I think that may require an A3 type oil, the Mobil 1 0w30 is a very low HT/HS viscosity oil for a 30 weight (2.99, only synthetic I know lower is Syntec 5w30 at 2.92).

I would see if you could find German Castrol 0w30 at an AutoZone or something. A 0w30 or 5w30, ACEA A3 rated oil would be fine in your climate, and Mobil 1 0W-40 may be an acceptable substitute.

I believe your manual specifically says Castrol because of the BP/Ford deal. What does it say for oil in it? Grades, temperatures, oil change interval, meets standard ____? Is it a turbo car?

Since Mobil 1 is an off-brand (never seen it around here) I would vote against it in any application.

Mobil 1 however, would be a good choice. Is your engine the turbo or not? Mobil also makes a 0w30 which is recommended for the turbo.

You will find German Castrol only at Autozone.

Bottom line is that I'm guessing your car is still under warranty, and in that case I would only use oils spec'd for the application.
 
No offense, but I don't see why everyone thinks their owner's manual is out to get them and if they run what the manufacturer recommends, it's not gonna be good enough for their car. -shrugs-
 
Cut and paste from Volvo Europe and USA owner's manuals.

Volvo Europe recommends A5/B5 oil for the new cars 05-

Castrol SLX Professional Longtec for Volvo Cars A5/B5 0W-30
HTHS 150C 2.98, Viscosity @100°C 9.8, Viscosity @ 40°C 56.

Volvo USA minimum requirements ILSAC specification GF-3, API SL, and ACEA A1/B1.

When temperatures exceed 86° F (30° C) in your area, Volvo recommends, for the protection of your engine, that you use a heavier weight oil, such as such as SAE 5W-40 or 0W-40.

Under normal use when temperatures do not exceed 86° F (30° C), SAE 5w30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protection.

Recommended viscosity SAE 0W-30, 5w30, 0W-40 and 5W-40.

Synthetic oils meeting SAE 0w30 or 0W-40 and complying with oil quality requirements are recommended for driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous areas.

For older cars and diesels Volvo recommends Castrol SLX Longtec 0w30 A3/B4.

I remember seeing someone ask about 0w40 in a jug on an Mobil 1 FAQ, and they said it will not come out in a jug - that could've chged - but would have to see it to believe it. Would also have to see a jug of Mobil 1 0w40 for $20 to believe it.
 
The car in question is a 2.4i non-turbo.

Thank you flod for the info, I did some research, looks like mobil 1 0w30 is too thin to offer much protection.

I have found that Pennzoil platinum 5w30
Castrol syntec 5w30 (whats interesting is that in the PDS Castrol recommends 0w-40 for volvo's, even though its only A4.) Its interesting that GC is only A4.
and Q Hp 5w30 (which my dealer uses) are all A5/B5 oils. So they are the lowest i'll go.

Mobil 1 0w-40 however does not seem to be speced at all on the web site, any one know if its A5?

Any other oils meet A5 specs. I've done some reading on the Castrol SLX professional Longtec, it seems to be one [censored] of an oil, (something about greatly exceeds A5 specs).
