so I'm inclined (at least a little bit) to say that my vehicle lands under the "severe service" category.

Again, your cure is thicker oil. If your engine doesn't specify synthetic oil, you can run conventional 10W-40. You can also run any synthetic xW-40 with similar results. I recommend M1 0W-40 SN because it's reasonably priced, easy-to-get, and top-quality.

Hey, you can even run conventional 15W-40 (thicker than 10W-40) or 20W-50 (thicker than 15W-40) for even less oil consumption and your engine still wouldn't complain.

Don't worry about NOACK. If x in xW-y is large, NOACK will be low. For example for a typical conventional 20W-50, NOACK is 5% or less.

Before I changed the valve-stem oil seals, I burned 1 qt per 1000 miles with conventional Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 and 2.5 qt with PP 5W-30 (non-GTL SN formula). Now, its less than 0.1 qt even with TGMO 0W-20 SN.

Get the six-pack on Amazon for $27.99 and then use the $12 online Mobil 1 rebate. If you have Discover card, it's an additional 5% off.

My local Autozone has the 5qt jug plus a M1 filter for $36 which may not be as cheap as amazon but cheaper than my current oil change setup so I'm happy. The Amazon deal only applies to Prime members which I am not and honestly have no interest in as I don't purchase enough from them. I'll definitely be picking that oil up though.

I say Walmart all the way! Best prices in town

(at least where I live anyway).

usually yes just this time no because it's the current sale at AZ. I had been buying my PUP+FU combo at walmart for $40 the M1+M1 filter combo special at AZ is $36 (both prices are after sales taxes) but the AZ special only runs until 10/19 so that gives me 5 days to make sure I go pick it up. I'll probably be doin that this Saturday.

Who are the participating retailers? apparently there's no list. If AutoZone is one of them that would be amazing because that would mean I'd be getting 5qts+filter for only $21!

Edit: found the list. Nope it ain't on there. Matter of fact the only store around me that is there is NAPA.

This is not true at all. HM oils can be used in new or older engines and the seal conditioners can prevent seals from becoming hard/brittle in the first place.

Well, too much of a good thing could be a bad thing. That's exactly why API SN, along with ACEA, API CJ-4, OEM specs, etc., all have both lower and upper limits on volume, hardness, and tensile-strength changes. However, it turns out that API SN without Resource Conserving (without ILSAC GF-5) also has the same limits. API SM has no limits. Here are the Limits for API SN:

True, and thanks for posting this. I was told by Valvoline's lead chemist that you can use MaxLife in a new engine. I would assume the amount they use would not be detrimental to a new engine.

Valvoline MaxLife is both SN and GF-5 approved (PDF link); so, it can be used in any engine that specifies these.

I submitted it for Amazon. We'll see if I'll get the rebate or not.

The Toyota 2.4 uses some oil, that's just the way it is. Some have speculated it's due to ring design. Go on the Rav4 forums, you'll see.

I've done my research on the 2AZ believe me I know. I'm just trying to minimize the consumption I don't mind 1qt or less being used throughout my 4.5k-5k mile OCI. Any more than that though bugs me. This OCI is coming to a close and I'll likely be at 1.3-1.5 qts consumed. Previously it had been pretty solid at about 1qt per OCI for a few OCIs. Now though it went up a bit, the only thing I did different this OCI was that when I was topping off the oil I accidentally overfilled the sump by half a qt.
