Mobil1 ATF compatible with Nissan J-Matic

I did a 3.5 qt. drain and refill in our 2004 Infiniti G35 with 40k on the odometer. I used 3.5qts of Mobil1 ATF as I had access to it nearby. Prior to this I did two previous drain and refills using Nissan J-Matic fluid (1st drain and refill at 30k and 2nd drain and refill at 32k). The car holds a total capacity of 11 qts. After doing a little reserach online, I've read that J-Matic should not be subsituted with anything else as the 5-speed automaic has a dual clutch system that requires this special fluid and it's either a synthetic blend or full synthetic. I've also read that warranty will be voided if a transmission problem occurs from using anything other than Nissan J-Matic fluid. My concern is that no where on the bottle of Mobil1 ATF does it say that it's J-Matic compatible and I am afraid that damage will occur. The reason for using Mobil1 ATF was that I slowly wanted to convert the transmission to full synthetic since Mobil 1 ATF is a multi vehicle formula like amsoil atf, which according to them is compatible with J-Matic.


My question is whether I should do several more drain and refils with Nissan J-Matic to dillute the Mobil1 ATF or is Mobil1 ATF okay in a J-Matic only spec transmission and will not cause any damage.

This is a very big concern for me so input would be appreiated. Thanks fellow BITOGers.
 
I thought there were not many OTC substitutes for MaticJ fluid. Some of the newer MV ATFs though say they are compatible with MaticJ.

I would not bother a whole lot if I were you since the tranny holds a good 10Q, but if the shift quality deterioates I would put MaticJ back in.
 
If you want to go the full synthetic route, check out Amsoil ATF (PM "Pablo" or "Gary Allan" or "Don Stefanik") and see if it's compatible with J-matic. If so, I'd go with the Amsoil.

You could also check Amsoil's website.

If it's not compatible (I'd be surprised), just do several drain and refills with the J-stuff.

What's your warranty on that ride, 4 years/50K miles?
 
Gee, they left me hanging with a 4 year/50K warranty. Nice!

Amsoil's website claims their ATF is recommended for Nissan D,J,K-matics. I'm using Molakule's Specialty Formulations synthetic ATF for a 2001 I30 with zero problems. I'd much rather have it than the D-matic that was OEM fluid.

Two choices: drain and flush three or four times with the "J" stuff, or have a T-tec flush performed with Amsoil full syn ATF. Either way, you should sleep more peacefully at night!

Then again, at least you're performing AT maintenance instead of waiting to 90k and saying, "what's wrong with my tranny? They told me the fluid was good for 100k!?"
 
Mobil1 ATF has long been recommended on Maxima.org for our cars. I refresh (drain/refill) every 20k miles with Mobil1 ATF.
 
yes, they are recommended for 4-speed D-Matic specified transmissions. The J-matic 5-speed automatic units (equipped in G35 and 350Z) are a different breed. The 6th gen Maxima 5-speed automatics specify k-matic fluid I believe. M1 ATF is not recommended for J-mAtic and K-Matic. The D-matic is recommeded as it's closely related to DexIII.
 
If shift quality hasn't deteriorated, don't worry about the M1 ATF. You are still majority old ATF. Mercon-V has some antishudder and smooth shift requirements. And, M1 is a full synthetic. I would not expect any shift issues with a single drain/refill.

For future drain/refills, stick with a fluid that mentions the J-matic spec. Amsoil, Amalie, Castrol Import, Pennzoil multivehicle, Advantage, Idemitsu...... should be considered.

If you're not in the hurry to get M1 out of the transmission, and if the shift degrades a little, add 3.5 ounces of Lubegard Platinum, Smartblend Titanium, or other shudder eliminating additive.

With a 11-quart capacity, and with only a 3.5 quart drain/refill, practice a more frequent drain/refill regimen. ~10k or yearly, whichever comes first, will help with transmission longevity.
