1994 Honda Accord VTEC 240K currently running Amsoil 10W30 signature series

using about 1/2 Qt per 1000 miles, maybe a touch more.

I have read quite a few people here talking of how good Mobil1 HM oils are at stopping/reducing oil consumption.

Since this engines orig' spec is 5W30, do you think i should try the Mobil1 HM 10W30 first or go straight to the 40 weight? I'd be using the Mobil1 ext' perf' filter too.

Thing is, my wife is running this car, we're currently separated so i cant keep my eye on the oil level so well as I used to and shes driving it a lot these days, I wanna put somethin in there that will not burn so much and end up with an oil level below the MIN!! Want to stay synthetic too, longer drains, less changes!

have looked at the Amsoil website, I could switch to the 10W40 AMO http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/amo.aspx
it says that this is good for higher mileages, but im kinda tempted to go with some off the shelf Mobil..

any input appreciated.

That consumption is on the high side. What are you using for oil/weight now? Because its a synthetic and your in FLA, sure, M1 HM 10w40 is fine. I blend some of it into my old Camry using M1 HM 5w30 in summer months.

Good point, I was thinking of upping the weight due to the mileage to stop the consumption, you reckon the HM formulation of the 5W30 will stop the consumption?

See it, first line sorry. You can use either. My experience with M1 HM over 2 years is it takes a while to see the benefits, more consumption in hot weather. If its real hot, use the thicker one. 7k OCI is the sweet spot.

I use Mobil-1 HM 10W-40 in our old '96 Camry V-6. OCI 7-to-8K. Zero (well, about a cup full of) oil usage between changes. 285,000 odometer miles. Blistering hot, dusty summers, can get as low as 0 degrees F in Winter. I must say this car gets a lot of highway mileage, but our dust certainly makes for less than ideal conditions. I used 5 'old' qts. of M-1 10W-30 20K back when out of 10W-40. The consumption went up to a bit less than 1 qt. consumption before changing back to 10W-40 HM at the next change. I realize mine is a Toyota 6 & your's is a Honda 4, but maybe this post will be helpful. I understand Fla., like Northwest TX, gets mighty hot, also!

'94 240k Honda $500...estranged wife $0.00 I'd find something else to sweat.

At 241Kmi it's already likely at the last resort...

In south FL even 20w-50 would not be out of the question...

This is also obvious to me - a correct perspective.

FWIW, I found that my old Accord burns less oil when running 'German Castrol' 0W-30 than with M1 10-30MH.

That said, my rate of consumption is about 1/6 of yours...

With that kind of consumption, I'd move to a conventional 10W-40 HM oil, like you run in your Astro...just seems awefully expensive to top-off with syn at that rate...

Fair point, but, as said in my orig' post im looking toward Mobil1 HM since it has a reputation for the stopping of oil consumption, I wanna put somethin in there that isnt gonna burn so much and that doesnt need topping off as I cannot keep an eye on it as much I used to.

Have decided to go with the 10W40 Mobil1 HM, swappin it out tomorrow. Dont wanna go thru the "test" of putting in the 10W30 version and finding out that it too burns off and wishing I had used the 40 weight.

thanks guys.
