And yet...another new bottle. The bottle used to just say "Mobil Synthetic ATF" and the back stated what it could be used in. Now, the bottle says "Mercon V" on the bottom. Both my cars require DEXRON III. Is this compatible?

The Mobil 1 ATF is, and has been for a while, a multi-vehicle ATF. So yes, Mercon V is an upgrade to Mercon, and DexronIII is usually labeled with Mercon. By the structure of the specifications, Mercon V is obviously an upgrade to DexronIII.

Basically, you will have no problems with compatibility. Check the back of the bottle, it should give the full readout of what it is designed to replace.

The site says it is a replacement, but if you squint real hard you can see the bottle only says "Mercon V" now.

The back doesn't mention Dexron III, only that it supercedes Dexron.

Quote:

Recommended for 2005 and earlier GM vehicles. Mobil DEXRON-VI ATF is recommended for 2006 and newer GM vehicles and improved performance in 2005 and earlier GM vehicles, whenever DEXRON is specified.

Fords that require a MERCON V fluid or 1988 and newer Fords that require a MERCON fluid.

Chrysler Automatics.

Allison C-4

Caterpillar T0-2

Recommended for use in any power steering unit where a DEXRON or MERCON fluid is recommended.

No mention of DEXRON III. If you require DEXRON III, is DEXRON-VI the replacement?

With Dexron-VI coming into the market, they may have changed their bottle to how it is now. All of the other companies have changed theirs to where it states "Not for use in vehicles requiring Dexron-VI."

Yes, Dexron-VI is the replacement for all DexronIII applications. Essentially, Dexron-VI is a far better fluid than conventional DexronIII, but synthetic DexronIII ATF may be just as good, if not better, than Dexron-VI (not trying to start a debate, it's been beaten too much already).

For you, I would say to go with whichever is cheaper and more readily available, Mobil Dexron-VI or Mobil 1 ATF. You're going to get an improved ATF, over conventional DexronIII/Mercon, regardless.

Thanks for the help.

if it calls for DEXIII then get something compatible with DEXIII.. keep is simple. valvolin maxlife in the red bottle is compatible with mercs, dex's, and others.. also mobile 1 syn atf is too

I have used Chevron Mercon V in my 2000 Maxima and it was a remarkable step ahead from DexronIII/MaticD fluid. I had to dump it recently and put in Castrol MV Import ATF since my raditor shot while on Mercon V and it was burnt.

Castrol MV Import ATF is OK but not as good as the Mercon V I had on my previous 20K miles.

I think basically what happened is that Mobil's Dexron III license has expired (as have everybody else's), and they can no label the product as Dexron III or Dexron III-compatible for legal reasons. You should be fine using it.

On valvoline website they were talking about transmission service, they had a picture of a guy looking at his dipstick with a half bottle showing.. the bottle..?

MOBIL 1 !

currently using the MOBIL 1 A.T.F. synthetic in place of the DEXRON 3 and no issues yet . Actually , 1 issue possibly , that being the steering seems more responsive with the MOBIL 1 .

forgot , using in 2000 PRIZM ( Corolla ) . Quite sure it says on backside of the M1 A.T.F. bottle can be used for MERCON as well .
