Obviously it is my week for extreme aggravation. Put 5w20 Mobil 1 synthetic in my 5.7 hemi and when it gets warmed up the valve train noise is apparent. The motor has 4800. miles and is a 2005 1500 truck.Dodge rec. 5w20. Thoughts? Next change will be AMSOIL 5w20.

Isn't Mobil the factory-fill all new HEMIs get?
M1 is just too d*** noisy (rather, it makes engines noisy). Try a different oil next time, either (dare I say it) Castrol, Pennzoil Platinum, or you could try using some GC and thin it out a little bit. I thinned out the GC in my car with one qt of Syntec blend 5-20. It works out to be a middle 30 wt instead of a thick 30 wt. (Had to do it because the M1 made my car sound like a Ford Powerstroke lol). Or if you wanna do dino you go with Havoline or Pennzoil. Try ANYTHING besides M1 and see if you still have that noise.
This has been debated over many times without anything more than good guesses as to why. I am currently experiencing excessive valvetrain noise by running Mobil 1 5w30 in the girlfriends 00 Integra.
Please dont say "Have your mechanic check valve adjustment, they are adjustable in Integras". I AM the Acura mechanic and have adjusted the valves. Twice. As soon as the engine gets to operating temps - tick tick tick. Very annoying.
I know Mobil 1 is solid oil but I am going to change it out soon and run something else to see if it goes away. If it does I may just stick with it. I like using Mobil 1 5w30 in my Legend and will continue to do so, but it looks like the Integra will be on a new oil diet soon.

Mobil 1 is obviously popular, and surely a pretty good oil. I have seen the noise issue discussed on bitog. Some say it made their engine noisy, others complement the resulting smoothness.

Dare I suggest that we have a thread specifically for Mobil 1 noise reports? Mobil 1 users can post their vehicle+engine+mileage+Mobil 1visc and their noise/quiet/smooth result. That way we might find out if there is a pattern. Or perhaps there is already such a thread and someone will point it out here.

Just a quick thought - could the oil's HTHS be playing a discriminent factor here? I know that redline's make-up is a significant difference, with reportedly high moly content and esters, but with it's 5w-20 having a reported HTHS of 3.3 or so...I wonder.

Might it also be noted that the oil could simply be a vibration transfer medium allowing for engine sounds over a given frequency range to be more audiable, where others have a different frequency range where there is less overall noise generated throughout the engine? I believe the valvetrain area could be a rather noisy place, with all those metal valves clapping closed and so forth. I believe others on this board have brought this up before.

I agree with Winston. I was one of the lucky individuals who happened upon the AutoZone $1 sale of M1 earlier this year. I have a boat load of 0w20 that I run. To "quiet" things down, I add a quart of something else, like GC this last change in my wife's van. Great protection and quiet.
I originally used Mobil 1 0w20 in my 04 Mazda6S and the car sounded pretty quiet. Then i switched to Mobil 1 5w20 because they stopped making the 0w formula and the engine sounds noticably louder. I should have stockpiled the 0w.
I think M1 often causes noise complaints because M1 is often thinner than other oils with the same weight rating. GC often gets kudos for making engines quiet, which I think is mainly because it is so thick.
Try something a bit thicker, or add a quart of thicker oil to the 5W20 mix. You can still meet the warranty requirements that way.
