Mobil 1 vs Castrol EDGE

what are everyones opinions between these two? edge made some pretty outlandish claims of its wear protection over M1.
I just noticed my walmart did a rollback on 5qt jugs of Edge down from $34 to $26.5 to make it worth looking at. M1 is still $22. I could care less about the $4.5, if edge is better in any way. What are your opinions?
Application is a 2000 Firebird, 3.8L (231ci) that has been running M1 for the last 50k miles or so, just turned 140,000 miles.

Is it the Mobil 1 Extended Performance that's for $22? I ask because Mobil 1 Extended Performance is more comparable to Castrol Edge - both targeted at long drain intervals. And you have not mentioned what kind of an OCI you are planning to use with those oils...

Castrol Edge has only 2 grades: 5W30 and 10W30, while M1 has many grades from 0W20 all the way to 15W50 available at most auto parts stores and WM. Even for the same price I would buy M1 rather than Castrol Edge, but currently you can get $10 rebate for buying 5 quarts M1 and this making M1 a much better deal.

i think extended performance is one of the cheaper oils. this M1 label doesn't have anything on it other than the grade. I am using 5w30 so the edge choices aren't a problem.

Give the edge a try, it seems like a good oil, as is M1. Really either will serve you well, it looks like M1 has for some time.

I would have to see some definitive proof of this before I would consider switching. I do not do long extended OCI so don't see the need, even though they are marketing this against the standard M1 which doesn't make sense to me. But it IS Castrol.

However, it seemed this product was starting to disapear already yet when I walked into Walmart they had just restocked their shelf with new jugs at the rollback price of $26.50. I also walked into a brand new AAP (open two days) and they had a fully stocked shelf as well and said they had not heard anything about it no longer being available. Funny thing is that their price for Edge was $6.49 per quart making it cheaper than regular Syntec. Guy said that was the new everyday price but he could be wrong.

Don't really know yet. I'd say it's def on par with M1. If they reduced the price, did they also reduce the formulation? I'd like to know that.

I don't doubt that it may be on par with M1 but you would think from the available grades, long service interval, and price point that there target market would be the Mobil 1 Extended Performance users and not the standard M1 flavor.

I would think that their Syntec line would still be considered the direct competitor to the standard M1.

This tends to make me think they have conceded that Syntec is not on par with the standard M1 or isn't getting enough market share and thus they had to come up with a new (better than Syntec) product line to try and contend.

If Walmart would lower the price of Edge I'd try it. Last I looked, it was $28 for 5 qts. As long as I can get PP for $20 and M1 for $22, I have no motivation.

Its a pitty, in Oz we have 5w30, 0w40, 10w60 and 25w50 the only mineral one aimed for built engines etc.

On top of that, the Castrol EDGE 5w30 we get here in the US is not the same as the Castrol EDGE 5w30 in other parts of the world. It's been specifically targeted to meet GM specs (plus some fuel economy standards).

Well, just from my own narrow little perspective, Edge appeared with two strikes against it, as it stepped up to the plate. The first is the price. Wow, that stuff is expensive. For several years, I've entertained the idea that as soon as the OTC syns were at or near $8/qt, I'd go ahead and try RL (while understanding that RL would probably be climbing too). So here we are, with CE making its debut north of $8/qt.

Second, just as I'm getting fully comfortable with my 20 wt oil selections, here comes the brand new CE, and what do they do -- introduce it with no 20 wt flavors at all. Good move Castrol. Just as 20s are becoming ultra-common on store shelves, they intro a new premier line -- with no 20s. . .

I was sorta thinking their marketing folks would try to make sure that as many customers as possible would have a reason to try the stuff, but instead, for me -- two reasons not to bother.

hmm the stuff we have is targeted to all cars, mainly the Asian car scene and Holdens and Fords (yes yes nearly all the cars in the world) but these cars feature on their ads the most.

i went back this afternoon, they are selling jugs of Mobil 1 Extended Performance for 26$ also. the regular fully syn was 22$. the EP was even harder to come by than the edge.

Am I better off upgrading to the EP-M1 and still changing it every 3-4k?

For 3-4k OCI I would just stick with the standard Mobil 1. I do 5k OCI's on my GTO with the standard Mobil 1 5w30 and I would think most members here on BITOG would still find that conservative.

And rember, Mobil 1 Extended Performance is targeted at Extended OCI's not better wear protection as "claimed" by Castrol Edge so short OCI with EP will gain you nothing except a smaller wallet.

The standard Mobil 1 line is still Mobil's Flagship line for their Synthetics. I.E. meets the most required spec's.

I wouldn't buy too much into the wear protection claim of Edge until we see some long term use of the product showing real results. Mobil has a proven track record for many years with several members on this board with high mileage vehicles that have seen nothing but Mobil 1.

Our Pontiac G8 version of that car specs nothing higher than a 5w30.

Heck, for 3-4k OCI, I'd probably use mineral oil and save the money. But I do understand that for many of us here running best-of-the-best lets us sleep better at night - can't put a price on that.

Sorry to

but 5k on Mobil 1 Extended Performance or 3k-4k on Mobil 1 sure does feel like a real waste to me.

But I would go for the Edge for 2 or 3 OCI's and see what you think, Castrol has never let me down. I would run it but I cannot find it on sale here anywhere! Also I have a nice stash of 0w30 XD3 I need to start using.
