Mobil 1 vs. Amsoil ATF

Is it just me or does Mobil 1 ATF have better specs than Amsoil ATF?

They are both good ATF's. I've run both in my Subaru's and they both work very well. I compared the specs before too. Some of the Mobil 1 specs for some tests amsoil lists I couldn't find. Since buying Mobil 1 syn atf retail costs about the same as amsoil @ preferred customer rate, and I order lots of other amsoil stuff anyway, I stayed with the amsoil.
 
I'm not sure that one is demonstrably 'better' than the other. Personally, I'd use Mobil 1 because it's cheaper... and available most anywhere.

The specs are better higher viscosity index, higher flash point, lower pour point... I'm using Amsoil ATF in the G35 right now and it shifts perfect but I think im gonna use the Mobil 1 ATF Mercon 5 for the 98 Mark VIII.

If you look at my OP post I never claimed one fluid better than the other, I just am looking at the specs of both of them and thought the M1 came out on top specs wise.

I don't know a great deal about ATF, but am left wondering why the Amsoil ATF seems to have a lower Viscosity Index than several of the other ATF's that I have looked at. As per another post, I know that base oil selection has a lot to do with an ATF's Viscosity Index. I am not 100% certain if a higher Viscosity Index equates to a more robust fluid though.

Schaeffer's #204SAT ATF = 196

Amsoil ATF = 172

Red Line D4 ATF = 198

Royal Purple Max ATF = 197.5

Valvoline Maxlife ATF = 169

Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF = 200

Mobil 1 ATF = 199

Please look up all the starting viscosities of those fluids. I know a few, Schaeffer's is 7-7.9, Redline D4 is 7.4., RP is 7.4, M1 is 7.6, etc

Then look up Redline D6. It's about 6.5 cSt as I recall. Look up the VI of Redline D6. It's 166. And what is Amsoil's viscosity at 100°C? There's a large portion of the answer.

Now find out if Castrol or Valvoline use VII's or PPA's. Amsoil has none. There is the rest of the answer.
 
I think that I understood what you have said, but want to make sure. The lower starting viscosity of the Amsoil ATF (6.8) correlates with its viscosity index of 172. Also, Amsoil does not use VII's, which most likely explains the high viscosity index on some of the ATF's listed in my post.
 
People usually report positive results for both. I know the Amsoil is very, Mobil probably as well.

The Pour Point difference is only 1 lousy Degree C. Heck, the Calibration or the Tolerance on the Thermocouple can be more than that.....

I have used both with great success.

Buy M1 for Mercon/Mercon V applications since it is cheaper and easier to find.

Buy Amsoil where Mercon/Mercon V are not accepted.

Before Dexron VI was invented, I recommended M1 for Dex III applications as well.

Can anyone explain the large difference in the Brookfield Viscosity @ -40 between Mobil 1 and Amsoil? 9087 Vs 5190 is quite a spread. Other Mercon V fluids, even Valvoline's synthetic, are around 10,000. Only Redline is in the 5000 range. While I realize that -40 is not something many of us deal with, we use these extreme high/low stats to rate oils and transmission fluids. All things being equal, isn't the lower the number the better?

I will take a guess that it was explained above by the fact that no VII is used in the Amsoil fluid. Amsoil's base fluid has to be a little more viscous to achieve its target 100C viscocity. Whereas Moibl 1 uses a less viscous base fluid and adds as much VII as they need to end up with their target viscocity at 100C. I think what you are seeing is a result of the difference in base fluids used.
 
It depends what base oil/s they used. If you search you will find a great deal of discussion about what the term 'synthetic' does or does not mean.
 
I have used Mobil Synthetic ATF for a long long time. I have had anything but good results with it. I cannot say it is the best synthetic ATF on the planet because I have not tested enough of them to make such a claim. ALl Ic an say is that it has always down well for me. I have used Amsoil Universal ATF in a T/Case and in power steering systems and it too has done very well and never given me any issues at all! I have used Redline C+ in my Dodge and it too was an excellent product and Ihave the UOA fromit posted on this site. So I think as long as you use a synthetic that most closely match's what your OEM fill was all will be well. Wear is not usualy the problem with automatics it is usualy oxidation that kills the transmission early so all true synthetics will help to reduce this problem.
 
Well Viscosity is just the thickness of the oil, someone here said that they saw a milage loss with M1 Transmission Fluid, perhaps Amsoil is making there's a little more slippery, so that you don't lose efficiency.
