I've been hanging around here off and on for about a year, but finally registered a few days ago and this is my first post

. I've been running Mobil 1 5W30 up to this point, but noticed they have a Truck and SUV formula now. I can't find any information on it other than what's on Mobil 1's website. What's different about it other than "Extra performance additive helps provide exceptional performance....", and what exactly is that additive?? Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it really any better than regular Mobil 1 and should I even consider it? Also, if anyone has seen any impressive used oil analysis (which I should have ALREADY done myself

) on this vehicle I'd appreciate your input. Thanks all!

Vehicle:
-2004 GMC Z71
-5.3L
-81k miles (yes, I drive A LOT)

Current fill and filter:
-Mobil 1 5w30
-Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter
-3K OCI...I know, that's VERY frequent. I'm switching to 5K OCI's now.

Driving habits:
-90% highway miles @ 70-80 mph
-I tend to be pretty aggresive with the throttle when accelerating and passing.

I heard or read that M! truck and SUV has a diff additive package, I used it last time at 3000 miles it sheared to a very thin brew the truck revved so easy it was like water. I changed to GC 0w30 thats really thick next time I'm throwing in a few qts of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20, M! is still good stuff I have no problem going to it again.

I am using it in both my Volvos and it is the best oil I have ever uesed. My cars run smoother with no engine clatter/tapping. My Volvos call for 15w40 and this is the best option for my vehicles and I have tried many other oils but none of them have been as good as the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40. I think you would love it and keep us posted on your decision.

Mobil 1 Truck and SUV used to be a 5W-40 viscosity, but now the current offering is 5w30 and meets the ILSAC GF-4 requirements, to allow usage in newer applications still under warranty.

With the exception of specific gravity,(Truck & SUV is slightly higher) both Mobil 1 regular and Truck & SUV have about identical product data sheets.

So the higher specific gravity of the Truck & SUV may indicate slightly heavier base stocks to help out with volatility in towing applications.

But if you are well under 10K on your OCI's a used oil analysis may show virtually no difference in the performance of regular 5w30 vs. the Truck & SUV 5w30.

And I believe the regular Mobil 1 5w30 will be slightly less $ when purchased as a 5 qt jug plus 1 single qt for your 6 qt crankcase.

Actually, Blue99 they sell it in both 5w30 and 5w40 for the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV. I am not real sure about the performance difference as I have not really tested the M1 regular synthetic only the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40.

Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is 5w30 only. The 5W-40 is now called Turbo Diesel Truck.

I imagine that the difference is minimal between the regular Mobil 1 5w30 and the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV. I wouldn't waste my money on any of them if you're changing your oil at 3K intervals, and I certainly wouldn't be spending the extra money on a Mobil oil filter.

I think all of the Mobil 1 varieties discussed here (5w30, Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w30, 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck) are all good oils. But you can regularly get Pennzoil Platinum on sale at Advance Auto Parts for ~$3 per quart. I would use that with a Purolator filter for at least 5K intervals.

vronline: Yeah, 3k OCI is way too frequent for fully synthetic, especially with the prices of M1. I've always been old school though, doing 3k intervals, even after switching from conventional to full synthetic. I know I can go longer, but I start getting nervous for some reason after 3k mi, lol. Old habits are hard to break I guess. Also, I can be pretty hard on vehicles. That's why I like changing fluids so frequently. I don't ever tow anything and I don't go offroading much. If I do any off roading, it's just for a fun weekend down some wooded trails where street tires won't get you stuck. Most of the abuse on the truck is from high reving when accelerating, that's why I was thinking a heavier duty oil would work better. But I'm not reving the dog out of it all the time. I'll rev it high getting on the highway and then set the cruise. Or if I'm passing someone, sometimes I'll mat it.

BTW, my current fill is at 3,503 mi. I'm doing it! I've actually gone PAST 3k miles on an oil change, lol. Also, I've been looking at Mobil 1 Extended Performance oils. Since I drive so many miles, I was thinking about going to 7,500 OCI's with the Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil and filter. How do the EP oils look on used oil analysis? Does it protect engines better and promote longer engine life? Would it be worth it with my driving habits and vehicle or should I just stick with regular Mobil 1/Mobil 1 Truck and SUV with Mobil 1 filter at 5k OCI's? I've thought about running RL too, but wanted to run something I can buy off any store shelf and knew that I couldn't go wrong with Mobil 1. But here's a whole other question: is 5W30 REALLY heavy enough for a 5.3L V8 in a truck that see's some high revs? My factory oil pressure gauge will read around 75 psi when I mat it, so it seems that it's heavy enough. I'll check today and see where my oil pressures should be at idle, steady, and full throttle and that should give me a better idea. Although, factory gauges aren't always the best ones to go off of....unless you own a Ferrari

I would suggest the following to make yourself comfortable and know that you're doing what's best for your truck.

1. Run the current fill out to 5k and when you drain the oil take a sample and send it in for a used oil analysis and make sure you get the TBN reading.

2. Put in some of the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil (5w30) and do the same thing again but I would go longer if the previous used oil analysis says you can. The Truck & SUV should last at least as long as the regular Mobil 1 5w30.

3. Depending on how the used oil analysis are looking I would try some other oils others have had good luck with such as the Pennzoil Platinum someone else mentioned. Find out what works best in YOUR truck with YOUR driving habits and conditions.

I was doing the exact same thing you were doing when I first found this site. I was using Mobil 1 and changing it out every 3k miles. I did a used oil analysis and found my cars weren't as happy as they could be after a 6k mile run based on wear metals. I've been experimenting on one of my cars while trying to use up my Mobil 1 stock by mixing in 1 qt of another thicker oil. I also plan to try Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Syntec 0w30 (GC), and Mobil 1 by itself 1 more time just to see if my first so so used oil analysis was a fluke.

Good luck.

The Wal-Marts around here sell both Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Truck and SUV for the same price.

I have been using Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W30 for a while now, but have not got around to getting a used oil analysis done. Maybe one of these days I will... One slight difference I did notice over conventional Havoline 5W30 and Motorcraft 5W20 was that the truck seemed to be a little more quiet.

This may open a can of worms, but which UOA company is considered the "best". I've noticed that a lot of people use Black Stone Labs, but I've seen a few others around here as well. Any input?

Regardless of the quoted add packages the 5w30 T & S oil is A1A5/B1B5 rated and the Standard Mobil 1 5w30 was only A1A5 rated which suggests that the T&S oil is a more robust oil for the longer OCI.

I'm going to do a used oil analysis on the Mobil 1 5w30 at 5k and I think my next fill might be Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 (due to the approaching warm/hot weather). I keep hearing a lot about the Pennzoil Platinum and thought I should get a used oil analysis on it too. The only bad thing about this little test is the different weights, granted it kind of "equals" out in that the 5w30 was used in cold temperatures and the heavier 10w30 will be used in warm temps. Whatever the next fill is, I'll probably use a Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter to try and keep things as close to the Mobil 1 used oil analysis conditions as possible. The different weights may vary the results slightly, but if I at least use the same filter it'll help keep things a little more controlled.
