Mobil 1 question

With all the talk about Mobil 1 switching to Grp lll,my friend has a question I could not answer so I come here asking for help from the experts

He has 3 qt's of SL Mobil 1 5w30 (blue cap), and 2 qt's of SL Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30. Would there be a problem in mixing these? I am not sure if there is much difference in base oils between the two to make a difference? He also has 2 qt's of SL Mobil 1 10w30 (green cap). Would that be a better "mixing" match than the SL 5w30 EP? Thanks in advance

Not that I know anything about additives chemistry in Mobil 1 oils and how they interact with each other, but in my experience oils are safe to mix. I've done that before with SL Mobil 1 5w30, 10w30, and currently I run 50/50 mix of SL Mobil 1 0w30 and SL Esso Extra XD-3 0w30 with no adverse effects.

Why are you mixing 2 0w30 motor oils?

I doubt there would be any problems mixing any combination even though the performance MAY not be optimized. Best bet is to call the Mobil tech line and ask them, as they should know what's in their oils.

XD-3 is a bit thicker then I'd like during warm winter like that. But I like to have HDEO in the sump for this 10k miles winter run.
I had few options to thin it out. I wanted to use up my Mobil stack, so I took 0w30 from my shelf. I know I would have been better with 10w30, but I didn't have it. It is thinner then 0w30 in the most of operating ambient temperature range for my car.

I'm under the impression Mobil 1 "added" Group III to it's Group IV base oil. That's not the same as switching to Group III. Do you have any evidence that Mobil 1 is all Group III for today's typical passenger vehicles that use 5W-20/30?

Most all oils will mix with most all oils.
Sticking with Mobil/Mobil is the best of a mixing situation.
Mobil, like most brands, uses the same additives for it all or most of it's oils, just changing the ratios for each weight or grade.

Yes it will be fine, since the additive chemistries are very close. Mixing Group III and PAO basestocks is done all the time and indeed many top tier European synlube employ this formulation approach to meet a particular spec at the lowest cost.

I would generally avoid mixing HDEO's and PCMO's, since the add packs of those tend to be quite different and may even use a different chemical form of ZDDP.
