No, the problem is saying how you invented GP3+ when most people should know that Shell are the first to have played with the slack wax. Shell stuck with it as their main performance base oil, only using pao in a few race specific ones. Shell have been using GP3+ and PAO blends for ages now in their racing oils, including Formula 1. Shell Helix Ultra has always used the slack wax base oil, but only now to Mobil want to talk about theirs.
Its not our fault Mobil kept their Shell copy Visom locked up in a little factory in France.
Are all Group III+ created equal?
Mobil is saying they've created a Group III+ with the same performance of PAO. Does Shell's version perform like this?
Mobil may be saying that, but does that mean its true? Or just a line to sell the loyal flock lest they lose faith?
I would say no two oils are "equal" because we all know there are differences in base stocks and additive packages. But does that make Mobil the holy grail of oils? The be-all end-all for every consumer out there?
I kind of doubt it. I think they make a fine product, but because of the differences mentioned above, it follows that it'll be slightly better suited for some, not quite so well suited for others.
For my part, I'd decided before all this hoopla came out about Mobil and it being Group III, that it really made no difference to me anyway since its still over priced here, and Syntec and PP cost far less. Are they inferior to Mobil 1? I doubt it. Not necessarily any better either, but good enough for the price.
It also doesn't help Mobil, in my case, that they completely relabel their product line here and sell it under different names than in the US - if I buy Mobil 1000 here is the exact same thing as MC5K in the US? And is 2000 the same as Mobil High Mileage down south? I can't tell and I'm not going to use it - regardless of price - if I don't know whether its just the label and naming that's different, or if they're also tinkering with what's in the bottle as part of the shell game their playing.
Bottom line I don't trust XOM. I will stick with the stuff that I do trust (and that also happens to be cheaper).
