Mobil 1 - Factory Fill

More marketing bilge. Manufacturers are not going to put a bad oil in there cars, that is a given. But I think this has more to do with marketing and $ than anything else. Having the little "mobil1" sticker on the car is a huge part of M1's marketing efforts. Other manufacturers may not even care about having it as a manufacturer recommended oil, and it does not make their oil any worse. Many of those oils are much better than the oil recommended by that little marketing sticker under the hood.

Well, you can even extend that to the Euro's where XOM works hand in hand with them. While this seems like something nifty neat unique ..it also allows M1 to always have the ball in their court first ..and with surely some residual in continued tribute.

Agree. Nothing wrong with marketing your product. That is how you SELL IT!

Well yes and no.

Let me give you some history on the Mobil 1 factory fill issue as far as GM is concerned. Mobil 1 was first factory fill on the 1992 Corvette LT1. This was purely based on engineering and nothing at all with marketing. The oil cooler was able to be eliminated from the car, thus saving costs, complexity and potential leak points all by using synthetic Mobil 1 oil. The oil reduced temps enough over regular oil with a cooler that it was spec'd as factory fill and recommended as th eoil to use. GM4871 spec was made just to be sure an oil is suitable for the car it will be used for. Now Ironically the ZR1 did not specify Mobil 1 oil until 1993...it was introduced in 1990.

In 2007 the new Escalade and it's 6.2 liter engine was a bit noisy at a first start up in very cold weather. The remedy was simply a change to Mobil 1 oil as the factory fill and that solved the issue until the engine underwent a minor revision. After the revisions - the Mobil 1 factory fill continued anyhow.

The above are just 2 examples of why a factory fill Mobil 1 was a benefit and not just marketing. Now - I can move on to supporting the idea of Mobil 1 as the factory fill in being a Marketing bonanza:

The Factory fill is still Mobil 1 for Corvettes, but guess what? The oil cooler made its way back with the C5. The new Escalades still come with Mobil 1 Factory fill and the neat oil cap....BUT the GMC Denali with the same 6.2V8 gets regular oil and a regular oil cap. Same engine but limted to 380hp by PCM programming vs the 403hp in the Cadillac. Mobil 1 is factory fill in my CTS with the DI engine (and the base too) as well as many many makes. While I like and use Mobil 1, it is true that in many cases it may not really be necessary in all applications and here is where the marketing blitz starts.

So what I'm trying to say is that in the beginning, Mobil 1 factory fill was a real need. However, I does appear that it has turned to more marketing than anything. Case in point being the example I cited for the Escalade getting M1 and the Denali not. I know this for fact because I see the engines everyday.

Look at Honda. They could have used any oil and recomended any oil. It is not like the Asian market place is short on oils to chose from but Honda's new spec. was meet with OTC stock M1. Everyone likes to push things like GC 0W30 or PP due to price but when OEM's have to choose a factory fill they always come back to M1. Now I am sure that other oils will due in 99% of the case's as long as you pick an oil and OCI that works for the vechile but it doe4s not change the fact that M1 is the first choice. I donot recall Fuchs being an OEM oil or AMsoil or Redline or PP or GC etc..... If SOPUS wanted to put their weight behind their oil they could easily supply OEM's with anything they needed but they do not do they?

This assumes that M1 was the ONLY synthetic that could have been in the crankcase. I'd say that it was a mutual marketing coup in the cooperative process.

..again, nothing wrong with that at all. Let's just no anoint it with magical powers graphed in heraldry.

Good point about SOPUS. I'm not sure Redline or Amsoil could meet the demand of the OEM's however.

Hi,
JohnBrowning - You said;

Both FUCHS and Castrol (with GC variants) are factory fill suppliers. No German Manufacturer is solely linked to one supplier! VW-Audi and BMW (and their component suppliers) do development work with Castrol. Mobil has worked with Benz since 1909 and with Daimler-Benz now Daimler AG since their formation in the 1920s

Daimler AG use Mobil as their new product development partner and they have doen for many years. This is the same with CAT and Detroit Diesel-MTU. I could go much further on the DD-MTU/Mobil issue but it is all to no avail on BITOG - people will believe what they want!

Porsche once used Shell as their development partner - until around 1992. From then on it has been a joint venture with Mobil!

Recently (May) when at the Daimler AG engine factory at Unterturkheim (a workplace for me in years gone by)I watched the first "run up" fill being conducted for the nearly 1000 produced there that day. It was a 5W-30 mineral lubricant - Mobil was not on the label!

As I have alluded to here before I spent time with a retired MB Director-Engineer that had been heavily involved with lubricant supply and testing. He noted that they have many lubricant suppliers (I won't be supplying details) and thet certain engine families do have M1 as the FF!

There is much more to just putting a label on the oil cap - it is not all marketing!

The direction this thread is taking made me laugh. In the same manner Microsoft was forced to package competing web browsers in the European version of Windows 7, I can almost see automakers being forced to allow customers to choose which brand to use for the factory fill. Maybe Coca-Cola will even be forced to include one can of Pepsi in every 6-Pack one day....LOL

ExxonMobil is probably giving automakers an incredible deal for using Mobil One as the factory fill. They know that a high percentage of folks will continue to use Mobile One by virtue of the logo on the fill cap. Can anyone fault ExxonMobil for using this approach to increase their market share?

Sorry, the oil cooler returned in 2005 for the C6 model.

My hatred for Mobil 1 is well known, but all of the vehicles I service have Mobil 1 or Mobil Clean 5000 in them
