Amsoil is claiming this wear test result to be factual. If thats so, Amsoil Signature Series Extended Drain Interval is more than twice as good as Mobil's High Endurance line.

It can be used for any lubricating fluid.

The results are true and were performed by an outside lab. If it wasn't true, Amsoil would have been forced to pull the graphs long ago.

That said - it's only a single test in MANY tests used by oil formulators. And it really has nothing to do with extended OCI. So to say "Amsoil Signature Series Extended Drain Interval is more than twice as good as Mobil's High Endurance line" is misleading. The limitations of the 4-ball test have been discussed to death here.

Note that there is a version of this test FOR GREASE.

1. I didn't say it could not be USED for any lubricating fluid. I stated it is a gear oil and grease test (though yes, the grease test is separate) and not applicable to engine oil.

2. I didn't state the results were untrue. Rather, I said the test was not applicable to engine oil.

3. Yes, it is a single test. A test ONLY used by AMSOIL for their oils. ALL of the major oil manufacturers use this test for validating gear lubes (and its sister test for greases) yet NONE of them use it for engine oil. I wonder why that is?

Oh wait, I know! Its because its results are not applicable to an internal combustion engine! The same reason the Timken test is also irrelevant (and again, not used by major oil manufacturers).

I've said it before, and I will say it again: AMSOIL makes a fantastic product! But they need to DROP the 4-ball test for their engine oils. It is irrelevant and there are enough REAL TESTS out there FOR validating engine oil that they could use instead that it makes the continued use of this test almost irritating.

Its like me saying the fleece used by Columbia shows a smaller penetration hole in the Kevlar Jacket Test than the fleece used by Eddie Bauer, therefore the Columbia fleece jackets are superior!

Great, except the test was designed to validate Kevlar Police jackets, not fleece coats! You see what I mean?
 
Overk1ll, you make very valid points. Amsoil also knows 98% of the public has no idea what this test is and they will market it to there benefit.

Very possible. But they aren't posting the results of those tests on their websites to be read as an indicator of their engine oil's performance.

I can find 4-ball test results from all of the major oil manufacturers. They provide them for their gear lubes and greases. But they don't for their engine oils.

Lets say for example, that using a 3rd party lab, I could verify that Redline did the best in ASTM D6514.

This test is used to validate turbine oils.

There is nothing saying I couldn't use this test on an automotive lubricant, just like with the 4-ball test. If I were to try and argue its relevance would you not question it?

That's the point I am making here.
 
Are there roller or ball bearings in an internal combustion engine (ICE)? If there are, are they a leading cause of lubrication related failures? Four Ball is a ball bearing test yes?

If Amsoil wants to show supremacy they should publish test results of piston and cam wear related tests and other wear zones.

Exactly. I imagine there are a veritable plethora of tests that AMSOIL would do exceptionally well on and are actually specified for IC engines.

Their grades are all very robust (being designed for extended drains) and have a "no holds barred" approach to add-pack implementation.

If they could choose a test used by all the other major oil companies and post up the results of their oil's performance in IT, then I know at least personally, I would be a much happier man.
 
Ive listened to taped lectures by leading intellectual Noam Chomsky and he sometimes talks about how advertisers do exactly the opposite of what consumers think they're getting: the real facts about the product so they can make informed decision on what they buy.
