What is the real difference between between Mobil 1 Extended Performance and regular Mobil 1 with both being 15W 50?

Not sure! Maybe it's a whole bunch of little things such as;
1 part addative package, TBN, TAN etc.
1 part Group Oil(one being GroupIII/PAO and one being all PAO)
1 part cST(maybe one is a little heavier than the other)
1 part Marketing(for use in vehicles allowing much longer OCI's)
For example: Some Honda's allowing 10,000 mile OCI's and some BMW's allowing 15,000 mile OCI's with the proper grade and group oil such as a PAO or Ester. These are just my guesses!

What is the difference between Mobil 1® Extended Performance and Mobil 1?
Mobil 1 Extended Performance formulas are designed specifically for today's longer service intervals and are guaranteed to protect for up to 15,000 miles or one year.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance has a unique formulation with a boosted level of protection and performance. Mobil 1 Extended Performance, with the Advanced SuperSyn System, contains 50 percent more SuperSyn than Mobil 1. (Updated March 2006) Right from the mobil website under FAQs for Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

thank you captain obvious..i think he was looking for technical data..not what the marketing team at exxon put together

Interesting it has more Super Syn than regular M1.

I always thought it was a Group III since it didn't meet the GM 4718 (Corvette) spec.

It's possible they've tweaked the formulation since then, but in some used oil analysis done by Butler labs in 2005 on the 5w30, the big differences are:
Boron - 251 EP vs 76
Calcium - 2822 EP vs 2380
Phos - 948 EP vs 678
Zinc - 1058 Ep vs 775

Sarcasm isn't necessary. The question was what is the difference. I commented that EM said they had more Supersyn in the EP. He simply quoted exactly what they said, which was what I had thought they said. It is called context, and you should familiarize yourself with it before you go with the sarcasm. His post was quite relevant.

I've wandered this myself, I was using Mobil 1 Extended Performance for the last year or two. Although I wasn't able to bring myself to lengthen the oci's very much, I just changed it out cause at five months old and less than four thousand miles it had used some oil and it was darkened quite a bit. Which I am not use to since I bought the car new and have been "wasting money" doing oci's every three months "per warranty" with only usually 1-2 thousand miles on it. With mobil 1 synthetic since 2,000 and only 28,000 easily driven miles,I didn't think it should have either.

I know, I know

Putting on flame suit!

I ask because I have been using regular Mobil 1 in a 1997 normally aspirated Porsche.

I need to do an oil change and my supply of Mobil 1 is gone. The parts stores here seem to only have the extended performance Mobil 1, the containers have gold colored cap as opposed to the silver cap on the Mobil 1 containers.

I did find the extended performance and regular Mobil 1 at a couple of Walmarts. Several other Walmarts were sold out of the regular Mobil 1.

I put about 500 miles a year on the car so I just change the oil once a year.

I was thinking maybe the extended performance oil may have additives that would be harmful to my engine, so I was trying to determine more precisely what was in each blend.

I think it would be ideal for you then, with the low mileage like me. It says it's good for the one year oci's, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I heard it basically somehow had "time realesed" additives.

The used oil analysis I've seen where both regular M1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance were tested in the same vehicle and I did not see any signs that EP was longer lasting.

That doesn't mean it's true, but it didn't help make the case for it being true.

Supersyn is high viscosity PAO used in small percentages in all M1 products that mention Supersyn, so it could be considered an additive even though it is only a hydrocarbon fluid. That won't do much for allowing longer oil change intervals. The statement that there is 50% more Supersyn in Mobil 1 Extended Performance sounds great when you don't know much about motor oil formulations...not so much when you do.

This is entirely hyperbole but since it's about Mobil 1 it is all in good fun. -----

I am more and more convinced that Supersyn is used as a VII.

Reverse engineer the marketing. 50% more supersyn in EP? IS the VI of the product 50% better? If not the starting base has a lower VI.

yes..relevant if your not capable of going to the mobil website and clicking on the FAQ

Relevant if you are participating in this conversation. How about we all just go to the sites and have no discussion? Arrogance is what drives people away from sites like this. It would be nice to have a conversation without it. I've seen many forums go extinct when it gets that way.

According to the Mobil 1 brochure (in addition to 50% more SuperSyn):
"Mobil 1 Extended Performance's unique formulation also includes 36% more anti-wear additives and 37% more cleaning agents than base Mobil 1, and features additional anti-oxidants to promote long oil life."

If you need a Mobil substitute for Mobil 1 0W-40, many have good luck with Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 (available at many truck stops).

Captain Obvious - that's a good one - it's been a while since I remember watching the SNL skit (or was that Mr. Obvious?)

We can do without your sarcastic remarks. If you do not have anything productive to say then do not type. We are here for info and not abuse.
