Mobil 1, esters, and cleaning

I don't think those of us who are at least a little skeptical are asking for too much, just some sort of additional evidence of a major formulation change.

Someone said the magic word.. "Cost"... For years it had been a goal to eliminate the high cost ester component for a lower cost component which would yield equal or better results. There are no "papers" or 'rest of the story' on this aspect as it is all new technology which is not being discussed or acknowledged by anyone. And actually other than for discussion purposes, the elimination of ester component has no impct (other than raising pour point somewhat) and in fact the current Mobil 1 performance is equal to/better than every aspect of the ester component Mobil 1.

Makes sense that Mobil would not give out this information. As a non-tech type I'm just wondering how Mobil 1 compares to other synthetics? It sure is easy to buy almost everywhere compared to the others discussed on this site.
 
Delvac is the only oil Mobile has that I think has any real cleaning action. Even Redline would take a long while to clean out an engine. If you want to clean an engine best to buy a product like Auto-Rx designed to gentle clean the engine. Auto-Rx has natural esters that are their just to clean! Any oil that leaves few deposits has a cleaning effect. I am not a big belivr in trying to clean you engine out with synthetics that is like trying to clean your theeth by sticking you head out the window at 100 MPS with your mouth open. BUy trying to use oil to clean an engine you are looking at 30,000 miles of short OCI's to try to clean the engine. The additives in the oil will be quickly depleted trying to do something they were not intended to do.
 
Anyone want to chip in once we get the GC results and have Mobil 1 broken down?

Buster makes some good points. Have esters been eliminated or reduced in M1? Is this why its chemical fingerprint has now changed and it always seems to show high iron?

Probably no more than a handfull of Ex-M employees know for sure, and could lose their jobs if they talk. Stupid paranoia though, real competitors would think nothing of buying some on the open market and analyzing it to the gnats behind. One word I haven't seen mentioned in this thread that may be the answer to a lot of the questions is the word, 'alkyated napthalene'.

Could this be the mysterious component that allows Mobil to formulate without use of ester type compounds?

Yes, it would. Alkylated napthalene is a group V synthetic base stock. Synthetic base stocks aren't limited to just PAO and ester. Group V includes esters and other chemically synthesized base stocks that aren't group IV.

My mistake, although I do beleve these compounds occur naturally in crude/coal.

Well, because I'm not the competition... I don't think he'd mind. I actually.. the father of another friend of mine worked high up in the company.. maybe he can give me an answer.. although, he retired 1 year ago.
