I called M1 today to ask about the AP oil. Specifically, I wanted to know what group it classifies under, 3, 4, 5?

The rep claimed that they have no authorization to disclose that information. She stated that the oil was tested for about a year and that it is worth the price....

I couldn't get much out of her as she seemed uninterested in discussing much about it.

Poor customer service from their part. A shame!

Any idea when that'll happen?

She basically said formulation is a trade secret.
You got the same answer as if you called Coca Cola and asked for exactly what's in their product, and it's an acceptable answer, not poor customer service.

Not sure why people think a mfg should disclose intellectual property to their customers.

If it protects 20K, I don't care what it is made from.

You set unrealistic expectations, got disappointed, and now are blaming the company???

LOL!

Let me clarify, I'm not saying poor customer service due to her not disclosing what group it was.

It was her attitude and non-desire to discuss anything about it really.

I didn't know that telling one what group an oil is was such a big deal. I didn't ask for their formula, so you can't compare that to Coca-Cola.

Maybe the rep was not allowed to discuss what you wanted to inquire about. I have had people complain to management about me when I answer their question correctly but it isn't the what they wanted to hear. Especially when it is a recall and parts are not available with no ETA I say "Parts are not yet available, you will be notified by Ford/Mazda when they are." which to me seems like it answers all possible questions, but apparently people think they want me to sugar coat it somehow.

I get that. We all hate generic answers sometime. They probably get a lot of inquiries now about the AP and maybe she was just tired about it. Who knows?

But honestly, I had no idea that they don't disclose whether is a group 3, 4, etc...

No problem. If Mobil doesn't want to tell me enough about their oil, I can always choose not buy it.

I'm always amused by such behavior. I guarantee that any of their competitors can simply buy a quart of the oil, test it, and find out everything we'd want to know about the oil. But, no, it's a "trade secret," and they won't divulge the information to the millions of consumers who are no danger of competing with XOM.

Call them back and talk to a different rep. See if anything changes or maybe ask for a manager to speak with. Talking to someone in the technical dept may also help.

I was transferred to the tech dept. That was her I talked to. Also, they're FB page dodged my question twice and asked me to call. I'm assuming that it's their policy not to disclose that.

On the base stock website - seems they are selling everything but GIII ... so hopefully that's pushing a higher level Tri-Syn or ?

The only thing we know about the oil is that M1AP is only 5,000 miles better than M1EP at twice the price.

If Mobil has a more compelling reason to buy M1AP over M1EP (or Pennzoil Ultra, or...) then it is their benefit to let us in on their secret.

For $50, I can buy one jug of M1AP good for 20,000 miles and 1 year.
For that same $50, I can buy two jugs of M1EP good for 30,000 miles and 2 years.

If I drive 15,000 miles a year (or less), then M1EP is clearly the better buy.

What will you buy then? Will any of the majors (BP, SOPUS) tell you exactly what their oil is made of? They all give out similar answers, so why single out XOM here?

We are back to caring about the group thing again, as if it mattered. Most oils are made of various oil bases and add packs in order to achieve a desired level of performance, and that performance is what should matter.
