Mobil 1 5w50 SL or SM?

I just changed over to Mobil 1 5W50 Supersyn and had a choice at Supercheap of the SL and SM versions. I chose SM did I get it right?

I can't say I've ever seen any Mobil 1 Supersyn API SM varieties on the shelves yet.

Yep, seen it in repco & the local mobil distributor here in Albury. The gold bottle 10w30 next to it was however not SM. Surely either oil is good enough to do a very good job.

We don't get the 5w-50 in the USA. Most of our SM SuperSyn strictly looks like reduced ZDDP only from the SL version. I see no advantage to it in SM. Here I would only buy the EP versions of M1. Do you get the EP down there?

No EP versions here. Takes a while for new M1 to get here.

5w-50 is the most common M1 sold here. Often it is the only version sold at Dept stores.

Thanks guru. Only Mobil 1 50wt. choice here now is Mobil 1 15w-50 EP. Only time will tell how the SM additive paks work out with the reduced zddp.

Used a bit last time I used D1. 235,000kms hard use 89 626 turbo and the old girl is getting tired.

Sounds like this may be more like what you need Penrite 25w-70 or something a little heavier 40w-70

I used the 25W70 for approx 3yrs it was called Penrite Turbo back then. The 40W70 should be the goods this summer but a tad thick even for me.

I'm just curious, how long does it take to pour a quart of 40W70 into an engine? 3, 4 minutes?

Not really. there isn'ta lot of difference between the viscosities in reality just people think there is. Mobil 1 5W50 pours like any other oil far as I can tell. Engine seems to like it, very smooth.

I picked up another 5L jug, and one 1L top up bottle of Mobil 1 10w30 last week. It's still the SL version (bottled in 2005).
