They may require less PPD or other additives, or give superior performance beyond the 0W performance requirement. But if an oil meets the requirements of a lower (better) winter rating then it must be labeled as such unless the blender is not following SAE labeling.On this note, if a synthetic 5W oil doesn't offer better cold performance than a conventional or blend 5W, then what's the benefit of synthetic oil for cold performance? I thought one of the big selling points for PAO and GTL are cold performance.
But yes if both a synthetic oil and a conventional meet the requirement for a 5W winter rating then the cranking and pumpability will be the same, at least within the limits of the requirement. To see anything substantially better would require a 0W oil but of course that is only evident below about -30 or -35F.
