Switched from the Mobil 1 0w40 I had been running to 10w40 "high mielage" a few weeks ago in my '97 e320 with 240k miles (m104 inline-6).

Previously with 0w40, the car would leave 2-3 drops on the driveway overnight from a small seep at the rear of the head gasket, and possibly a contributing rear main seat leak.

After the first few hundred miles, the leak slowed down to a single drop per night. Now with about 1500 miles on the 10w40 HM, the "drip" appears to have stopped completely. The rear of the head is still damp, and there is a drop of oil holding on for deal life at the bottom of the bellhousing, but the car hasn't left a single drop on the driveway in the last 5 days.

And the motor seems just as happy on the 10w40 HM as it ever did on the 0w40.

yep, especially when the engine isn't at full operating temp a thicker oil is going to leak out less. with that kind of mileage a 5w40 or 10w40 sounds good, provided the car requires an Xw40 weight.
