And why exactly is that.
There is very little operational viscosity difference between the 2 until below freezing temp come into play.
And let's be serious here. 10w-xx was prescribed for decades and engines operated just fine.
And the only real difference is start up viscosity. Operating temp viscosity is basically the same, and if used in an engine that's driven hard I'd rather have less VII than more only because of potential deposit accumulating on the ring lands.
More shear stable too,not that shear has proven to be negative when reasonable intervals are maintained.
I buy oil on sale, and I buy a lot of it. So for me I've got my bases covered no matter what the season or ambient temps.
If I was buying oil at time of change I'd buy what's cheapest, and what's appropriate based on ambient temps expected for that interval.
And 10w30s certainly aren't obsolete. Especially now that many diesels specify it. It may be considered a legacy grade for gassers though.

...heck, it's still one of two choices for the 2.0T in my sig and one of three for the 2.4. Right here in my 'obslolete Owners Manual'.

I got to thinking if it were summer would it really matter if I ran Mobil 1 10w30 in a pinch if the 5w30 was not available? Summer only I'm talking.

Not at all... some would argue that 10w30 is actually a better grade for summer use... less vii, slightly thicker base oil, more shear resistant, maybe...

Damage anything?? That's funny. I ran Mobil 1 10w30 for 25-30 years at 10K OCIs and put high miles on several engines. 220-350K. All of my engines performed very well when sold. Too much is made of viscosity here in my view.

My thoughts as well.
I think that because we have so many threads about "thinner oils protect better" that a lot of people come to the conclusion that if a thinner oil protects, then thicker oil will cause damage.
At least that's the impression I get whenever I see a thread about a dealer using 5w30 oil in a 5w20 specked car or 5w20 in a 0w20 car.

I agree with all of you. To their credit though, the "thin oil police" have toned it down quite a bit recently. A few years ago you would get called a "knuckle dragging neanderthal" if you happened to use 10-30. I don't hear the inflammatory language much anymore, thankfully.

I've noticed some 10w30s are actually slightly thinner than their 5w30 siblings @ 40C, 100C, and HTHS ...

This! not enough difference to even worry aboiut
