2011 Nissan Frontier (oil)

My father just purchased a used Nissan Frontier pick up with the VQ40DE V6 the truck has 52,000 miles. The owners manual says 5w30 SM oil he plans to run synthetic 5w30 in the winter but in the summer he plans to tow a 4,000 pound camper so he wants to run either Mobil 1 0w40 or Shell Rotella 10w30 and would like some advice on what oil would be a better choice for summer use?

I told him I am running Chevron Delo XLE 10w30 in my 2012 Nissan Pathfinder 4.0 V6 and it seems to run fine but he seems to be stuck on either the Shell 10w30 or Mobil 1 0w40? (He knows the brands better then the Chevron)

Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 (3.3 HTHS)

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 (3.5 HTHS)

In the South I would run 10W30 year round.

If I lived where normal summer highs were below 90F I would run 5W30 year round.

Does he have any evidence that the spec'd oil will not protect the engine while using the truck as it was designed to be used?

Anyway, both of the alternatives would be slightly more robust, and may give you the peace of mind you're after.

I don;'t know if they fixed it by 2011 but my 2007 Fronty lost the plastic timing chain guides. The engine is very robust and your father will have no problem running a syn 5w30 year 'round. But if the guides are still those nylon ones, no matter what oil you use, they will wear through.

From what I read Nissan fixed the timing chain and guide issue with the 2010 model year of the VQ40DE V6 the motor came out in 2005 so it only took them 5 years!
