I just got a smoking deal on four 4.4L bottles and four 1L bottles of Mobil 1 10w30. Upon opening the box I see that it is their "high mileage" blend (apparently all the M1 10w30 sold in Canada carries this label). This will be used in a FV1200 formula race car next season (air cooled, four cylinder, modified Volkswagen Beetle engine...1960's technology) with very short drain intervals. I've always stayed away from any "high mileage" oil or oil filters. What is the difference between this and the regular M1 10w30, and is this more suited to my application?

According to the M1 website the HM 10W30 is rated ACEA A3 which means HTST 150C is > 3.5. Very few _W30 can meet this High Temp Shear Test spec. Many don't want to for fuel economy reasons. The regular M1 and M1 EP don't cut it with this A3 spec. Some _W40's and more _W50's can meet it so this give you some idea of what this means. Based on the info presented here I say it looks like a good choice.

Otherwise I agree, you don't need extra detergent or seal swellers. Generally I would expect you to use straight W30 in this app unless startimng race fully cold.

VOA was just posted on M1 HM 10w30. Looked pretty good. Nothing wrong with HM oil if you look at it as a way to get a robust formulation in these days of CAFE and Energy Conserving limitations.

You can't get straight 30w M1 here, or any straight weight quality oil here (not locally, anyway...never seen any). I would really prefer 30w, but as I said, I got this stuff dirt cheap.

Octane - what you have there *is* just regular Mobil 1 10W30 with the SM rating. It is NOT the same as the Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W30 that is sold in the US and is SL rated (along with the ACEA rating too).

The Canadian labeling of the M1 10W30 had me fooled at first too. The phrase "Higher Mileage Vehicle Blend" on the label had me thinking it was a true high mileage formula. But that appears to be a marketing term to help average consumers decide which jug to grab off the shelf.

The real M1 High Mileage 10W30 is a pretty beefy oil. I just posted a VOA (and UOA) for it last week. Unfortunately you can't buy it here in Ontario. You'll have to make a trip over to the Wally Mart in Niagara Falls, NY to get some if you want it.

Perfect! That's what I wanted to hear - thanks a lot man!

HT/HS of this oil is 3.66. They claim extended drains, and to run it in short intervals for HM engines.
