I noticed this, after I checked out M1 PDS's the other day.

Oil is very stout (11.8 TBN), and thin enough that using it in application where one might use a HM or HDEO 30-weight, it wouldn't be out of the question.

So, when did this updated formulation go on sale? How can I tell if the M1 I bought a couple of months ago is formulated according to these new parameters?

Also, wonder what the pour point is.
 
I wonder if it will be available at Wally in the big jugs. Might give it a try. Or wait for a oil change special at the AAP's of the world.

Ok, I read about Visom in another thread. I never heard of it until a week or two ago.

So Visom came out a few years ago but they are using now? Or their PDS didn't get updated?
 
I also like how 'stout' the 10w30 has become - HTHS=3.26.

That's pretty high for a GF-4 10w30.......

I think it is gas to liquid. Something about using natural gas to make lubricating oil. Somebody will add more info.

The thread was about the release of a presentation they gave a few years ago. The release was recent but the presentation was old.

My understanding is that VISOM has been in use basically since it was announced.

Group IV (PAO) comes from natural gas also, IIRC. Read up on WWII history- Germany was so starved for crude oil after the allies finally got at Ploesti and other conventional refineries that virtually all of its lubricating oil and a lot of fuel was synthesized from natural gas.

From my reading, it appears that Group III+ includes varieties of of gas-to-liquid, severely hydroprocessed slack wax, or a mixture of both. At that extreme level of processing and chemical modification, it really doesn't matter anymore whether the starting product was crude oil or natural gas- the END product is extremely consistent and very much a man-made product, you can't throw the "not a real synthetic" accusation at it the way you can ordinary Group III stock. Shell's XHVI base (IIRC used in Rotella T6) is another example of a Group III+ base stock oil.

As much as I find fault with Mobil 1, I'd have to agree. It's not too think or too thin for most engines. ie, it wouldn't kill a 5w-20 speced engine, or likely not even a 15w40 speced light diesel engine. It's not limited by GF-4/GF-5 phosphorous limits, so it has 200 ppm zinc compared to a fuel economy grade. It could be run in Alaska or Saudi Arabia.
