NEW Mobil 1 PDS (GF-5/SN)

I like how they put the dexos1 license number on the PDS. With Castrol and Valvoline showing they meet the dexos1 spec on their PDS, but Mobil goes further with proof.

Looks good to me. I'd expect the Tbn of the EP to be higher for longer drains.

MRV @ -40 ºC (ASTM D4684) for both 0w oils is outstanding.

Buster thanks for posting.

The 0W-20 is now heavier with a HTHS of 2.7cP and a slightly higher VI of 173. Also the MRV has improved to 9,200cP.

The 5w30 is much the same with a slightly higher 172 VI.

The 0w30 has changed the most, reverting back closer to the spec's prior to the last up-date of 09/10.
Overall it's lighter with a HTHS of 3.0cP and a lower MRV of 13,250cP down from 17,100cP.
The big hit is to it's VI which has dropped from 180 to 166 but that's closer to what it was prior to 09/10 at 169.

On balance at temp's above freezing I see no advantage to the 0w30 over their 5w30, certainly not in cold start performance and therefore I'd prefer the 5w30 for it's slightly higher HTHS vis.

There is a possibility that the 0W-30s KV40 spec' is in error at 62.9cSt. That's up a lot from the previous 56.7cSt and is the sole reason for the drop in the oil's VI.
If I was in the market for this oil I'd check with Mobil on it.

Anyone have the old numbers?
Or maybe a side by side comparison, old vs new :]

TBN 8.8 (?) Wow. Even if I get evidence this stuff can hold it's TBN, this kind've talks me out of it. I like brutally long OCIs - my nerves can't deal with 8.8.

650 ppm for ZDDP (phosphorus) is near the GF-4/GF-5 minimum (600 ppm). The maximum allowed is 800 ppm in GF-4/GF-5 and 850 ppm in dexos1 (no minimum for dexos1).

Some oils retain TBN for higher miles than others. I called Mobil tech yesterday and discussed this TBN issue with them. As I have been a 10K OCI changer for 33 years with Mobil 1 oils, I was concerned about this as well. He told me they warrantee this oil for at least 10K OCI and it is good for longer than that. Over on the VOA section discussing the new Mobil 1 0w20 I said I may even due a used oil analysis my first OC with the SN oil for TBN retention. Now if you are interested in long OCIs with Mobil 1 oils, try the EP.

Compare this to the MRV of the reformulated (for GF-5) PC 0W30 ie for the PC the MRV is 24800 cP (up significantly from the GF-4 edition).

Again the new PC 0W30 has a VI of 177.

21Rouge....you took the thought right otta my mind, bro!

I'm seriously disappointed in PC - their oils used to be the KING when it came to cold weather specs....now M1's new 0W oils have MRV values almsot 2/3rds lower than the PC values!

Thing that bugs me the most is that in a place like Canada where a) gas is expensive; and b) it gets brutally cold, you'd think M1 would flog the heck out of light, fuel-saving, cold-weather oils! But no, they aren't even SOLD here!!!!!

Maybe we will get a few VOA's soon just for kicks.

I wasn't able to send out a sample of the SN 0w20. Hopefully tonight I can do that.
