Can you give me proof that they spend X amounts of dollors on this SPECIFIC oil? I'd like to see this.

Mobil 1 0w40 vs Red Line 0w30? Not a fair comparison.
The HTHS is so far apart on the two oils that they are for two completely different applications.

Red Line 5w30 is the one to compare to Mobil 1 0w40. High HTHS is for continuous high rpm operation.
Mobil 1 5w30 is the one to compare to Red Line 0w30. Low HTHS is for fuel economy in normal daily-driver use.

Picked these two oil because they were the ones that I was looking at not obviously because they were close. The Jag oil recommendation includes about everything but straight 90w. I had planned on using the Red Line 0w30 but began wondering if it was worth the $55 premium per oil change over the Mobil 1 0W40 which had also been recommended previously for the car on here.

-XOM has worked with some of the best engine manufacturers over the many years in developing this product.

-RL costs $10/qt, Mobil 1 0W-40 costs $4-5/qt.

I'd say Mobil 1 0W-40.

Where does Mobil 1 0W40 cost 4-5 dollars a quart?

My personal opinion would be Red Line 0W30

its on sale for $5.79 right now at napa as well as there is a 12 dollar rebate through mobil on 5 purchased quarts...
either oil is very good. one is easier to get, both are realistically in the grand scheme of things fantastic

Here we have started the brand loyal competition again. Honestly, you can run whatever in that car that it calls for, why spend on high end stuff if you are not racing or abusing it?? Mobil is most likely cheaper if I had to choose the two, so I would use that. I personally never really saw much RL used around my way or the race scene I was involved with. That was probably because the high price.

Yes it's hard to beat Mobil 1 0W-40 on value.
But it really is heavier than necessary for your application.
But what you could do is pick-up some Mobil 1 0W-40 and also MI 0W-20 (or the Mobil made Toyota 0W-20) and go with a 50/50 blend of the two.
Using Mobil 1 0W-20/0W-40 that will give you a 0w30 with similar viscosity spec's to Red Line 0W-30. A few members have gone with a similar blend here:

I just put an M1 blend in my Camaro:
50% 0w40, 50% 5w30 HM
This gives a very German Castrol-ish set of specs:
KV100 = 12.6
KV40 = 72
HTHS = 3.6 (This is the lightest 40 imaginable.)
VI = 175

It does give up a little bit of VI to what I could have if I blended in a 0wXX, but I used HM because I wanted the higher zddp content. Phos content ends up being 1050ppm.

Still trying to shake the 'Old Jag Guy' advice that I got when I first got the car that you should run 20w50. Will give that a try next go round I believe. Certainly can find other uses for that $55.

I do a similar blend with 0w40 and the standard Mobil 1 5w30. I'm going to just try the SN 5w30 and see how it does. Running SM 5w30 burned a 1/2 qt every 1000 miles in my LS1 GTO. I burn half that with this blend. I didn't burn any with 0w40 only, but I'm looking for a happy medium. I've finally got over my thicker is better kick.

I had really good results last year using Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 neat, but Mobil decreased the HTHS a little, and I was trying to get to 3.5. So I decided to do the mix with 0w40.

If you learn just one thing here at BITOG, it's that running a 20W-50 in your Jag is a bad idea.
If you already have it, try to return it. And if you can't return it tell us exactly what you have and I'll give you some further advise .....I won't be rude.

Didn't expect you to be rude Caterham and few on here seem to have been to my numerous dumb questions. I certainly hope I've never come off as rude.

The only orphan quarts I have that I got for this car are NextGen 10w40 and a quart and a half of the Mobil 1 15w50 that's been sitting in the garage since last June (not sure if they'd take that back).

*the quart of NextGen was bought on the road to top off when I drove 900 miles shortly after buying the car.

I have 1 quart Mobil 1 15W50 red-cap I bought 7-8 years ago. I may use it as top off in the E430 this summer.

Currently it has 7 quarts, 5 qt Mobil 1 0W20 and 2 qt 0W40, in the sump and capacity is 8.5 quarts. I think adding 1/2 to 1 qt 15W50 into a thin 0W30 will not change it too much.

If you want to use up the 1.5 qt Mobil 1 15W50 then use something thinner to thin down the heavy 15W50.
